10 things not to buy in 2010

Consumers who keep their computers for years and upload thousands of songs, videos, movies and photos will need to get more space at some point.External hard drives are one option, but an up-and-coming alternative might be simpler and save you another transition down the road. Online backup services, like Carbonite.com or Mozy.com, allow users to back up data over the Internet.
These services are more expensive than purchasing an external hard drive, which typically starts at around $70. At Carbonite.com, a one-year subscription starts at $54.95, and at Mozy.com monthly subscription costs total $54.45 for a year.

So I actually shouldn't buy Carbonite or Mozy subscriptions since they are more expensive than an external hard drive?

Now the writer could have made the argument that Carbonite and Mozy make backing up your valuable computer files more secure by being offsite but they certainly don't make a convincing argument based on price alone.

If people stop buying compact digital cameras it'll be because of camera phones, not DSLRs. We have two DSLRs and some awesome lenses, but we still use our point & shoot a lot because of the convenience and ease of use. It's only after we both got phones with decent cameras that we've started to use our Canon SD550 less.

I don't expect to stop buying external hard drives, but my uses are probably in the minority. I can't use Mozy to serve up videos to my Xbox/PS3

Compact digital cameras? What kind of stupidity is this?

Sure, dont buy the ones that cost 300+$, that would mean youre an idiot unless its an ultraslim compact, but a 150$ compact? Nothing wrong with that in the least. There is always a tradeoff of quality, quantity and portability. Not everyone wants a SLR strung around their shoulders, they want a slim compact in their shirt pocket.

Yep. My sister bought a DSLR but its too inconvenient to carry around and use on some trips and she ends up using my Canon point and shoot more. I'm not a cell phone junkie and usually get the cheapest phone available from T-Mobile. So I won't be using camera phones anytime soon. My Canon still fits nicely in my pocket though.

I think external drives will be around for a while. What sense does it make to pay a company for me to store my porn online? I would have to download it again to watch it.

But it would be new again since you had to download it again...😉

People look at me funny when I walk around with a Canon XSI and 200-500mm lens in my pants.

just got a CD and a DVD for xmas (well, a BD, but same logic)

not storing my pr0n on mozy. external hard drives it is!

So they're telling you to not buy any phone but an iPhone or Blackberry. Interesting.

No actually he didnt say that at all.
He said dont buy a pseudo smartphone cuz it wont have developer support.

Also, instead of putting gas guzzling cars at the bottom of the list I would have put American cars at the top of the list.

And I have to agree with the above guys about cameras. Camera phones may replace compact cameras, but neither one has anything to do with SLR's.

BUT, I do agree with the article about CD's, DVD's and Newspapers. Online is a much better way to do things and cheaper too. Since getting Netflix I have only purchased a handful of DVD's, and only because they were in a bargain bin AND I really liked them.

I haven't purchased a CD or DVD in several years.

Land line has been gone for the better part of a decade. (I do have an Ooma because the wife insisted we have something)

Never had a newspaper subscription.

I disagree with the external hard drive being on this list as they are not just for backups.

lol, i just purchased my first compact digital camera in 2010... and their argument is that i shouldn't have because there are bulkier more expensive models out there?

16mpg - check
Android phone - check
CD - Rare, very rare, but check
DVD? No. BD? - check
Newspaper - haha no
Home - far far far away. looking for an apartment soon though
Landline - not likely
external hard drive - check
compact digital camera - no. still rockin the Film SLR, one day maybe get a DSLR

I'm basically rockin the stone age apparently. 😀

Another article that suggests instead of using cheap ass commodity storage devices for our data we should repeatedly squeeze it through the pathetic, often unreliable, capped broadband connection that much of America doesn't even fucking have.

Yeah I didn't think they were very clear either. From a cumulative yearly cost standpoint Mozy and Carbonite are more expensive than a one-time HDD purchase. But from a security and reliability standpoint, they're probably a better value (only for off-site backup purposes).

Their argument against compact cameras was retarded. I fully expected them to talk about improving camera quality on cell phones. Not purchasing compact cams because of bulky, more expensive DSLRs makes no sense...

I vote this author is an idiot. How about the top ten websites you shouldn't visit in 2010?

#1: Yahoo Finance
