Speaking of fatties did anyone catch the shows running on TLC yesterday? Half ton teen, half ton mom, etc.

These people are sofaking HUGE. This kid was 19 and weighed 799lbs. There was a 16 year old that weighed like 575lbs.

Insane!

One thing skinny people seldom do is go hungry. Well, for most obese people, they are constantly hungry. Their body does not shut off the hunger switch.

How many here can honestly say they could live their lives starving everyday?
[...]

This is so very true. :(

This is exactly my experience as a life-long fat man (I'm 24 now). I was up to 220lbs in 2005, managed to get down to 140 (at 5'7"), and it is unbelievably difficult to keep it off. I think my food cravings are just as bad as they ever were (likely worse). I manage to stay in control most days, but on the days when I fall off the wagon....it gets ugly.

I've kept the weight off for about 1.5 years so far (as compared to when I went from 215->140lbs in high school and gained it all back inside of three years). But every time I think about what essentially amounts to having to constantly deny myself food for the rest of my life...I can't help but wonder why I bother. But I also know I can't go back to the way it used to be...because I've seen what happens if I just eat as I please. So I come to the reluctant decision that if I'm going to be unsatisfied and/or unhappy either way, I'd rather be thin than fat.

I'm not sure that any of this even makes sense to someone who's never been fat...but that's my life in a nutshell.

1. They don't diet - True, I hate eating low-fat and other diet food
2. They keep track of their weight - Sort of, I have a rough idea of my weight but don't weigh myself regularly
3. They exercise regularly - Never exercise
4. They don't solve problems with food - Not usually, but it happens every once in a while
5. They stop eating when they're full - I agree 100%. I've overeaten recently because of the holidays and I still feel crappy.
6. They don't surround themselves with temptation - False, but I do have strong willpower and can control myself when choosing what to eat
7. They allow themselves treats - True! I ate 3/4 of a pint of haagen-dazs the other night, but I eat ice cream once a month at most
8. They eat breakfast - I never eat breakfast, I feel sick if I eat early in the day
9. They move, stand and fidget more - Meh...I do stand often and maybe fidget but I'm not so sure about moving
10. They don't skip meals - I skip breakfast everyday, and occasionally other meals if I have to

I agree with the genetics argument others have mentioned.

I am 6' tall and dance around 135 lbs.

##. They don't eat too fast

This is my problem. I scarf like a starvin' marvin. Stmoach doesn't have the chance to digest and send the signals to my brain that I'm "full/satisfied".

Pffft. I grew up with 3 older brothers. I had to eat fast or I didn't get seconds or thirds. And in my family a "helping" was whatever filled the plate without falling off.

Was skinny all my life. So were my brothers.

Something that is just right for me (not hungry but not too full after eating) is so filling to him that he complains of feeling so stuffed he can barely walk.

Maybe these things build up over time. I'm thinking since my stomach is larger, it takes more food for me to feel full, which of course makes it that much harder to lose weight. He also doesn't seem to suffer from any lagtime - he will stop eating in the middle of a meal, whereas I will sometimes continue to feel hungry for several minutes after finishing a meal, even a large one.
Sounds familiar.
My parents would sometimes like to take the family out to all-you-can-eat restaurants. I'd usually get yelled a bit at for not eating enough. I walk into places like that with the words "EASY PROFIT" written all over me. I'd get one platefull of food and be done.

Slow eater here. If I try to eat quickly, I wind up chewing the inside of my mouth to shreds. It's bad enough to do so rarely when eating normally; the injuries will invariably turn into open sores and persist for up to two weeks. The best I can do is use benzocaine ointment to dull the pain a little.

If I'm in no particular hurry, I can end up drawing out a few chocolate chip cookies for 10 minutes while watching TV or neffing.
When getting ready for classes or work, I usually allot at least 15 minutes for eating. Even a simple pack of 2 Pop-Tarts can take a few minutes.

You think that knife and fork are just for use with the food? Defend yourself! ;)

All of these are true for me. I'm genetically predisposed to being overweight. Most of my family is overweight, including my twin brother. I had to work very hard to get from 90kg to 65kg and still have to work hard to keep it off. I absolutely believe that these rules apply to people who have trouble with weight.

I've been up since 5:30am and it's now 10:20am. I have yet to eat anything but have had two cups of coffee.

Could easily skip lunch and wait for dinner.

Now that's nuts. I need that breakfast boost or else I'm really jittery. That's usually my cue for "time to eat" - my hands start shaking almost uncontrollably, and it's tough to stay well-balanced when standing, and not so much that traditional stomach-based feeling of hunger. Or else I've just learned to ignore it. It is there, but I can kind of will it away, kind of like how I can get rid of hiccups, or stifle a sneeze just by focusing my mind on either one. Not quite the right way to put that in words, but it's as close as I can reasonably get. I get hiccups about 3-5x a year, but rarely do I produce more than 1 before just making them go away.

Let's see....I had some chocolate chocolate chip cookies + milk for breakfast. That was at around 3:15am. I haven't had anything to eat or drink since then. I suppose it's about time.

Time to cook some chicken thighs. Ns1? You listening? Yeah, they're getting made in my traditional method: Cooked in boiling water.

There's no magic metabolic switch. Personal responsibility has just gone out of fashion. And I need to lose weight.

most people would say I'm thin. Very true...excepting the relatively new "gut" :p (6'1", ~155).

as this applies in my case:

1. True
2. nope (but it never seems to change)
3. lol
4. OK, true for me
5. pretty much, yeah. but I do eat too much per meal, most of the time.
6. uh...no.
7. hmmm, sure, but I'm not into sweets anyway
8. does cold cereal + yogurt + coffee count? (bacon ~1-2x per week)
9. fidgety, maybe. work and home life is mostly sedentary, though
10. horseshit. I forget to eat more often than not.

I'd say about 1/2 of those apply to me. I think in my case, I've always considered how I've never really been a fan of deserts, candy, sweet things for the most part. I love donuts and such, but never had this unnerving craving that I must have a donut, and must have many. snacks for me have always been on the healthier side of the bar. When I snack, it's usually chips + salsa, some 95% of the time, for the past 20 years. over the last 8 or so years, I've added humus + pita/chips to that regimen.

I haven't liked soda for as long as I can remember, and prefer the taste of water over most anything else. I'd say the only thing I over-indulge in is beer (most definitely) and wine. Not piss beer either...heavy malt, high Alc beer mostly. ...SO that's pretty much a meal in itself. Well, it at least worked for many more centuries than a concept of diet has ever existed... :p

As a health professional and as someone who battles weight, I've had cause to look into this for some time.

Amused has it pretty much nailed as far as he goes, so I'll just add a few things.

First, throw away the concept that 2000 kCal is 2000 kCal. It isn't. There are people who exercise AND restrict themselves and still don't lose weight. Why? Because metabolism isn't static. Within the same individual, the body will adjust to different parameters. It will become more metabolically efficient. Why that happens is a matter of genetics.

Second, we haven't changed significantly as a species since we were hunter/gatherers. The ability to conserve calories is naturally a plus. If you had to walk 20 miles a day to obtain 2k calories you are better off if you can get by with less. Unfortunately for our bodies that's not what we are dealing with. We are surrounded by food and have the same sets of genes. As has been said, people aren't full after consuming the same number of calories.

So why are we fatter? Because we push buttons instead of plows. We don't hoe gardens, we have meetings. The amount of physical work is far less than ever. Further, if anyone wants to gain weight, all you need to do is cut back on sleep.
Sleep deficits = more fat. Hormones are pumped out in quantity that guarantee it's going to happen. In most cultures, there is a siesta built in. Imaging going to your boss and say "hey, I'm going to take a half hour snooze"? Imagine you finding a new job, in spite of the fact that studies consistently show that total productivity is enhanced by doing just that.

We aren't screwed up, we just insist on living in a world we cannot accommodate and it's going to get worse, not better. There aren't more weak willed people, just people who are ignorant of how things are.
