I work in sunnyvale for a silicon company. The rumor mill/friends obviously exist and of course, google is so massive that it's hard to not know anyone who doesn't work at google.

#1 above is NOT true whatsoever at Google, from the small handful of people I know that work there.

They can say it all they want, but it's simply not true.

When you have projects waiting to be finished, you're not going to find 20% of your time to goof off. Simple fact of most companies.

I too work in San Jose for a major internet/silicon valley company. Google pays non technical people (business/marketing, etc) out of school 40k a year... about 12 k under the average for the SJ Area...

Official and confirmed

Actually I go to U of M and they do a fair bit of recruiting here. I'm not a CS major so I don't really care, but it's not true that they only recruit at the Ivy Leagues, which IIRC don't even have that good of CS programs to begin with.

My aunt just told me they were setting up shop in Ann Arbor. That's pretty cool, and a good thing for Michigan (the whole state in general). IIRC, UoM is supposed to have a pretty good CS program.

Too bad Detroit is still too much of a black-eye to make anywhere in Southeast and South-central Michigan worth living there.

Well, that's the same as most other tech companies. I'm pulling weeeks that last about 55 hours, and I live in the City, so between my commute and my job I spend aout 13 hours a day at work, or getting to/from work :) and i've been out here for on the order of 'weeks' at this point

Google recruits heavily at my school, NC State, which has a well respected engineering (and CS) program. Hardly Ivy League, LOL

Yeah, so a city that does not even come close to bordering Detroit is not worth living in because of Detroit. Spoken like someone who has never visited Ann Arbor or any of its surrounding communities.

That defacto sucks. Glad I'm a business person.

Cheers!
