10 pin power supply on 12 pin mobo

im setting up new pc parts.
the power supply is 10pins and it fits inside the 12pin plug
the mobo also has a 4pin which the power supply as as well

on powerup
the mobo doesnt beep or anything. the monitor light blinks knowing it's getting something from the card.

does that mean i need a new psu? it's 450 watts

Be nice to have the make and model of PSU and mobo for useful answers. Making sure that the memory, CPU and vid cards are seated properly in their sockets solves most no beeps/no vid on boot issues.
