I thought I read Neweg isn't the best place for HDDs due to their lack of packaging protection. Superbiiz was supposed to be much better.

same here on my last momentus XT purchase. I think only the cheapest of drives are getting lower rate packaging...makes no sense for them to spend $5 shipping a $30 drive though.

I have not had any bad packaging from newegg. Then again I have only bought 3 Hard Drives from there.

Mine come from the PA warehouse. They package the shipments very well. I think the problem varies with different distribution warehouses in the country and thus the differing opinions here.

Wait what?!?! Do they have a PA warehouse now? Are you sure it's not NJ?
Do I have to pay PA tax now? :(

Plastic shell is Samsung's OEM packaging. Otherwise, it'd just come in anti-static bag wrapped in bubble wrap. And from Newegg's CA warehouse in my experience, it comes in a big enough box with plenty of styrofoam peanuts...but the packers are usually too lazy to put the drive in the middle. So the drive just sits on top or the side of the box where it's suspect to more shock. And although it's wrapped in bubble wrap, there's usually one point in which the drive remains unpadded as it's between the air cells on the bubble wrap.

I recently purchased a Samsung F3 1TB drive from newegg during their shocker deal.
The drive was shipped from their CA warehouse. The packaging included a 12x10ish sized outer box filled with folded paper type filler. Inside the primary box was a smaller box about 8x6x3. The drive was in a a plastic shell wrapped in bubble wrap inside this second box.

I have no problems with packaging of this type for a drive /shrug

craftech is correct, it varies with ship point, and they have LOTS of ship WH.

I must say Amazon HDD packing is truly exemplary, and they have a blurb about it

"Amazon Has Certified That This Packaging Is Frustration-Free
This hard drive is delivered in an easy-to-open, recyclable box specifically engineered to protect fragile items during shipping."

Since there is no tax and free ship with Amazon, buying a HDD from newegg is really not a practical option for me, and hasnt been for a long time.
