Well, there is no passenger train that goes anywhere near where I work... or where I used to live.

I'll also say that when I lived closer to work it was much harder to separate work time from non-work time. It seemed like I was always working. That's not a recipe for good mental health, long term.

Sure that makes sense, over here every town has a train station so it's not really such a big deal. I can't imagine driving that much though, I've done 6,000 miles in the last two years.

Most of the time I enjoy it. It's the perfect time to think, time to work stuff out.

The only times it gets annoying are when people don't get out of the passing lane on the freeway (like the M roads you have across the pond). I'm always in the passing lane (because I'm always going faster than other traffic).. and on the rare occasion when I'm not going faster than someone I yield the passing lane to them.

The weather doesn't really bother me; if the roads are bad work is usually called off anyway.

Yeah fair enough, I like the thinking times on the train, if I were commuting that distance, I wouldn't mind if it was on A roads. :)

I average 34,000km a year and I hardly leave my city.

Why are you driving everywhere in your city?!

because we don't have good transit funding. So the system is not good enough for me to depend on. I have to pick up my kid from daycare before six and that is just not possible on transit.

Oh fair enough, makes sense, I've been to Toronto, and all I remember about it was that it is beautiful and clean.

Wow that's a trek. I live 1.2 miles from the furthest thing I need to go to every week.

Edit: Just checked, my and my partner live 46 miles apart and that's an LDR for us. Also if I were to drive 85 miles it could get to the bottom of the country!

round trip for me to work is 108 miles, takes about 40 min each way, the drive in is pretty relaxing TBH. there is no other form of transportation out here, NONE. no bus, no taxi, no train

It's no surprise that people don't have that many high mileage cars in the UK. Let's face it, watching Top Gear, I'm always amazed at how much it costs to drive when they mention costs. It's like the government over there just doesn't want anyone driving cars.

Probably helps the traffic problem quite a bit.
/sits in LA rush hour traffic for 5 hours

Maybe that's how they pay for transit. Things like trains are super expensive. Here is a map of London's train system
