One of my former customers did much of the masonry work for that house. There was also a lot of "smart house" technology installed that was state-of-the-art in the early 90s but fairly pedestrian now. For example, guests would register with the concierge (or whatever their title is) and indicate their favorite music style, lighting preferences, etc. then their section of the house was tailored accordingly.

Gates complained at first because the property taxes were going to be well over $600,000 (over $1M today). He said his salary was only $600K and his property taxes shouldn't be higher than his salary. Obviously his stock options and bonuses netted a lot more than his base salary.

**Much respect to Mr. Gates** whats was his logic? if the property taxes are too damn high then build a smaller place or if he is truly a genius he would have taken a $1 salary and more stock options.

I agree there's no logic behind it, I guess just the general sentiment that property taxes could exceed the base salary of the head of one of the largest companies in the world is excessive. His recent statements that taxes in general should be raised on the wealthy and all his philanthropism indicate his opinions may have changed.
