I bought 3 for the family, they run 100-130 bucks filled and new old stock. It seems like a no brainer, It can make the difference between getting out alive or dying from smoke inhalation.

Normally they run 700 dollars (North 850s) but they can be had for 100 bucks NOS filled on epay. One guy is even selling a monster 1 hour carbon fibre SCBA NOS setup shit if I lived in a 50th floor condo I would definitely buy one. One hour should give you plenty of time to try and figure out how to get out of a 50 floor building if your on a high floor.

Oh and complete tagged halotron extinguishers for 114 bucks with current tag, marine bracket, stickers etc. I bought a few to replace my old halon's

Anyhow the getting is good if your looking to add some safety to the home/condo/etc..

About the hydro. you can get hydrostatic/visual check for the SCBA escape cylinders for 30-35 bucks and get them filled. so you can buy one and practice, then get it hydro/filled for 30 They already ship from the epay vendors filled but if you want extra peace of mind you can practice with one and do the fill/test at your local shop.

oh here is a link to the escape SCBA you can get for 100 bucks. looks like one place sells them for 900 dollars.

Seems installing and maintaining decent smoke and CO detectors would be a better way to protect the family. If you have a fire that grows so fast after smoke detector goes off that you can't just walk out of the house you are probably already screwed. If smoke is so thick you can'tell breath, then you probably won't be able to see to get out anyway.

That's a very good idea. I never knew they made such a thing. I see a few on eBay.

I was a fire fighter explorer and I am quite familiar with an SCBA. I was once in a smoke house that was around 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Once I got out you could literately squeeze the sweat out of my shirt.

Interesting did not know that was a thing. I guess it would make sense for people in high rises where you can't just walk outside.

There is an even better option. some guy is selling a 6 pack of these Essex VRU packs for 100 bucks. they are mini-rebreathers that can last up to 1 hour if you are waiting for rescue and not exerting yourself.

I ordered a sixpack and used one of the units to test, and it definitely works. Its cool, you will hear the hissing sound and the bag mask inflating as it fills with O2 and then you can feel the CO2 scrubbers getting warm as it sucks out the CO2. They will definately save your ass in a fire escape situation where you need to get out without dying from inhaling CO and hydrogen cyanide etc.. generated by the fire or even lack of Oxygen due to the combustion.

The things are flat and compact, They seemed to be issued to the Secret Service since it comes with an instruction placard that says "Secret Service, Technical Division" Super slick item, first time I have seen them. They are issued to different government agencies according to Essex.

For 100 bucks you get 6 which means you can practice with one and have 5 left. a no brainer you can keep one or more at home, one or two at your office desk etc..

It was foolproof, it took me seconds to get it on and working. You can easily put it on someone as well like a child etc.. There are videos on how to use them on youtube.

I think that if I heard screaming from outside my front door, I'd probably don one of those before answering. Seems like the safest thing to do.

What is the shelf life and recharge cost?

Recharge cost of the SCBAs such as the Honeywell EBA-10 or North 850's is cheap you can fill them at any dive shop that supplies grade D or better breathing air. Hydrotest with air fill is 30-35 dollars every 5 years. Tons of places will do it so you can practice with one and have them checked/filled with no issue.

I bought it on eBay. Tons of cool shit there for cheap. The 6 pack of VRU's is a no brainer.

Do you have a specific link? Typing in VRU or VRU SCBA yields nothing.

Edit-

Found them with EBA-10 or North 850. But I certainly don't see packs of 6. LOL

Its there, and they have 8 6 packs left, the seem to be selling fast dont want to post the direct link since I hear you get banned for that.

The cool thing, the VRU fits my dog perfectly. These VRUs are a great design since the neck seal is well designed and creates a closed circuit environment. My dog looks like an astronaut when the thing inflates and turns into a spherical globe.

Been playing around with my full size SCBA (30 minute backpack tank) Those things are cool as hell. Whats interesting is breathing with one makes you feel like you have super-lungs, ZERO effort breathing all you do is barely inhale and its like someone is breathing for you, the air just goes in cool as heck. The air has zero odor, it actually feels better than breathing regular air ie: Super clean? no moisture? not sure why.

Also why are these things so cheap on eBay? The model I bought costs brand new 2000 dollars + expensive shipping. The one I bought was new sealed with warranty paper work etc, it even had air in it from the factory, still within the warranty period/hydrostat time. It only cost me an even 308 dollars with free shipping :) I bought his second one as spare to store away.

You definitely sound like darth vader with it.
