California public-school records on about 10 million students -- including their Social Security numbers -- will soon be handed over to attorneys for a parent group suing the state, with both parties blaming the other for the impending release of private information.

"We asked repeatedly, many times, for the data without identifiable information," said the group's president, Linda McNulty

It was not immediately clear why Social Security numbers and other sensitive information couldn't be redacted.

Yeah I am guessing the people handing the data over are at fault for this. I am having a really hard time coming up with a legitimate reason the data can't have the SS# field redacted\removed. Claiming you were forced to release this data sounds like a great way to strengthen your side of the argument

Yep, that's my take as well. It would not be difficult at all to redact that information, they appear to just want to use it as leverage to paint the other side as unreasonable.

The amount of effort they put into it was SELECT * FROM ...

Anything beyond that is too much work. I blame the unions.

Are all of the records digital? Or are some of the records paper copies? If the latter, then that's a LOT of time. Even if 10,000 of the records are paper records, that's a LOT of time.

That's the question - if it's physical , it would be hard to redact.
If it's electronic, it would be incredibly easy.

First of all the lawsuit is BS!!! Both of my kids were in the special education program at one point. My daughter "graduated" from it and my autistic son was in it the entire time he was in school. The special ed programs were great, and even though there were a few speed bumps on the way, we were able to get around them.

So my thought is FU to the parents who are suing who want their children treated like a special snowflake.

Parents in the Morgan Hill Unified School District filed the lawsuit, which contends that the California Department of Education does not force school districts to provide appropriate special-education services for children needing them.
