Wow ... I havn't been skiing out there in a few years but I've been in that kind of dump & its just amazing ... its hard to picture how deep the snow gets unless you've seen it.

I remember one day at Heavenly when it was snowing so hard it was making a roaring sound a lot like very heavy rain & it kept going that way for the entire day ... luckily we were staying right at Harveys in South Lake Tahoe & had take a shuttle to the tram, because even with chains it would have been impossible to drive!

Ya, we are going to get hammered. Interstate 80 should be a fricking mess with all the flatlanders driving up to Reno in there 4X4 SUVs. They'll be wearing shorts, t-shirts and sandals, stuck in the snow freezing their asses off.

I hit up Northstar on 12/21 before flying off to places that are 90+ in heat =(. I know my snowboard is sitting in my room waiting for my return. Arghhhh. Oh well. I'm totally hitting the slopes once I return.

They need it. I was there last week and there were soo many exposed rocks. I would say the coverage here on the east coast was than it was in the Tahoe area during the month of December.

Not looking forward to the deluge here in the valley. I KNOW we need the rain and snow, but my fcking subdivision floods everytime we get more than 1/2" of rain in a 24 hour period...(rants about cities that don't builld storm sewers, but rely instead on rockwells to handle rainwater)

Seems to me that the weather channel and a lot of other places are starting to sensationalize the weather (sensationalism sells). So, if the real forecast is for 2 to 3 feet of snow, with a 1% possibility of 10 foot snow drifts in a couple of areas, they key in on the biggest number and report that. "10 FEET!!!"

Pizza's rule for snow: expect 40% of the weather channel's forecast.
So far this season, that rule has been much closer than the actual forecast.

My friends, who are active duty military, are looking forward to getting a couple days of skiing in for free courtesy of Squaw Valley.

I'll be in Las Vegas, so I won't be able to enjoy the snow.

There's a huge difference between 10 foot drifts and 10 feet of snow. We had about 10 foot drifts here last year after our big blizzard. But it was only a few actual feet of snow on the ground. Took two days to be able to get my car out though - finally has loaders come in and clear stuff away. We had huge piles of snow sitting around through February.

10 actual feet of snow would be nuts.

I never understood the concept of having a reporter standing outside in the extreme conditions and do a live report. Best part is they tell people not to go out since it is horrible. I would like to see a reporter standing at the glass wall inside of a coffee shop and report and point outside, nice and toasty with a mug of coffee :)

We get the forecast for Castle Peak, which is Donner Summit.
Last night they were calling for up to 10'.
This mornings forecast is calling for 3' - 5' at 3" - 4" per hour.

We'd have to tunnel through with our blower.

It's actually not that uncommon for the high Sierra to get 10' out of a good wet storm. That does not necessarily translate to 10' in the Tahoe basin, but it WILL mean a nasty drive for those folks who try to drive up to go skiing...

THIS is exactly what I mean by sensationalism in weather reports. That video link was posted here about a year ago.

I wish I had the rest of it where they showed the Today Show people joking about it. (Water is about 4-6 inches deep in the street and the weather reporter is in a canoe)

edit: I found the rest. The only part worth watching is the very beginning, and the last 45 or 50 seconds when they cut back to the today show people.
(I'll quote the funny line from the middle: "10's of thousands of dollars in damage" which puts the "flood" in perspective.)

If you're so worried about MSM and sensationalism then just use the NWS:

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/foreca...ns.php?sid=rev&pil=afd

BY THE TIME THE WEEKEND IS OVER...SOME PARTS OF THE SIERRA CREST
WILL LIKELY RECEIVE BETWEEN 5 AND 10 FEET OF SNOW WITH AT LEAST 1-2
FEET AT LAKE LEVEL AND HIGHER TERRAIN/FOOTHILLS OF THE EASTERN
SIERRA.
