10/100 Hub problem (potentially)

We have a Linksys 10/100 Hub feeding 3 jacks. We have never had a network problem for the last 2 years.

Yesterday we got a network copier/fax machine for our floor. I hooked up the 4th and final port on the hub and now we have 3 workstations and the copier all connected.

Since I did that, we all experience periodic drops lasting 5 seconds or so every few minutes. Sometimes it happens over and over again for afew minutes and then other times we don't notice any drops for a half hour or so.

Is the hub overloaded? Should I buy a switch or bring in an old Linksys wired router to use as a switch instead?

Start by replacing that hub with a switch (preferably a new one). And no, I wouldn't use an old linksys router as a switch unless you're already 100% certain that there are no problems with it.

This ... 10/100 SWITCHES are dirt cheap, if you want GB, they're still really cheap.

get a web managed switch for business - that way you can detect troublesome devices.

also some old devices don't like new switches and require forced negotiation.

1810G-24 is a great low end switch for business.

This will more than likely solve all of your problems.
