10,000 rpm and 7200 rpm hd's

i would really like to get a 74gb raptor, but i have a truck load of media and what not to transfer from my old comp to my new comp. would there be a big difference if i had a raptor as my boot drive and then a regular 7200 sata as my secondary? would there be any ill effect? thanks

If there on the same channel it may cause some slowdown but if its on separate channels no

Wouldn't make any difference at all. SATA drives do not share channels.

thanks, guys. yea, my friend was just telling me that there would be a big difference, but i think he may have been talking about ide drives that spin at different speeds. only problem now is to earn enough money to get a raptor..

So you just want a raptor as a boot drive? Unless you need to reboot 10+ times per day, I don't think shaving off a few seconds on boot times is worth paying up to 4x as much for a hd. Look at the raptor benchmarks on this very site before you buy.

But isn't the loading times for programs, games, and other applications, a lot faster than with the raptor as opposed to the typical sata?

Not really, it's a little better, but hardly worth the $.
I went with a 120GB Seagate 7200.7 drive and I am very happy with it

If I ever had money to burn however, I would buy a Ratpor just because
..But it's not really "worth it" in my opinion.

I HATE loading times, and wouldn't give up my raptor for anything.

The way I see it your HD causes the most slowdown as far as bootup and program/game loads. Why not get the fastest you can afford?

I've got a pair of 74GB Raptors in RAID 0 right now but after I build my new system I'm going to split them up so they are the boot drive in my primary system and server. I've got a 300GB SATA drive for storage in the primary system and 4 120GB WD IDE drives in RAID 5 in my server. Yes, I know I'm a data packrat and idiot.

hmm yea..i see what you mean..i think i'll go ahead and try the raptor with another drive for storage. i guess the speed of loading from the storage drive shouldnt be too bad with the raptor as a boot drive.
