1 x 500 GB vs 2 x 250 GB HDs

Which would give better performance when working with HiDef video files. The HD(s) will be going in a new HTPC. Not worried about the increased failure rate, I will have all the important stuff on my other PC.

Thanks

Probably best to get a 500GB drive with better seek times. Also, you have more room for future drives. You can get 500GB drives going for $200 after rebates.

I'm satisfied with 250GB HDDs because they're cheap. Using mobile racks make them very practical.
Swapping when you need them and still being affordable, what else could one wish for.

I just saw a lot of them @ $50 apiece, while the 500GBs were at $150 apiece. I could buy two 250GBs and their mobile and still have money left over to go to MacDonald's............

Thanks for your replies, I understand two 250 HD would be cheaper and one 500 would take less space and less power. What about performance?

2X250GB drives will own 1 500gb drive. If your video files are contiguous, the 2X250gb in raid hands down. Seektime might go up if you have them in raid but every instance that I know of where you have raid, overall performance improves. The reason 2X250gb may not lose performance over 1 500GB drive is because if they both have same platter density, the only difference between the two drives could be the # of platters in each drive. The 250gb drive could have say 2 platters while the 500GB would have 4 or 5 platters even..

Quite simply, get two 250GB drives instead.
