I installed a Seagate Barracuda (1tb) internal drive in December. After about two and a half months of running fine, last night I booted up my computer and all of the sudden the drive doesn't register.

I did recently install a new video card and am wondering if that had any impact but think probably not.

anyway, is there any way to test the drive? Any suggestions on what might be wrong with it? or how to diagnose?

Edited for content.

AFAIK there is no 1TB Raptor. By "Cavalier" I think you might mean "Caviar," a name used by Western Digital.

Have you tried uninstalling the video card and seeing if your system recognizes the drive? Obviously that's not a solution but it would at least allow you to recover data off the disk.

There is no 1TB Raptor. Biggest size is 600GB. You probably have a Western Digital 'Caviar' drive. Best bet is to first find out what the serial number & model number of drive is and then download the Western Digitial Diagnostic tools from their website to check the health of the drive.

Yep. Thanks for letting me know. I updated my original post but could not change the headline. It is a Seagate Barracuda.

Install and run seatools, as suggested above. See what it has to say about the drive.

Is the drive seen by the BIOS? If yes, the partition might have become corrupted in some way (possibly fixable). If the BIOS cant see the drive, there may be bigger problems.

Don't overlook seemingly stupid things like changing the power and data cables to make sure they are ok. Sometimes you get lucky and that's all that is wrong.

Thanks. I plan on downloading the Seagate tools tonight and seeing what is what. Not sure what it can/will do as Windows physically can't see the drive, but I have high hopes that is planned for and expected.

First thing I did was check the BIOS and it saw it. Second thing I did was check (unplug and replug) the cables. No joy still.

The only thing that makes me think it was the Video card is that the new card takes more power than the old one. But if that was the problem, i think I would have more problems than I am having now.

Anyway, thanks for the info. The prelim research I did suggested that the drive had died and I was SOL. Now at least I have some hope.

Downloaded software last night. It couldn't register the Seagate Drive. So I am guessing that is a bad thing.

anyone have any next step suggestions before I contact Seagate directly?

Thanks

This probably wouldn't have happened if Maxtor and Seagate didn't hop into bed with eachother.

Seagate before Maxtor , was a top notch company like WD

they made solid drives. But now if you buy a Seagate or Maxtor its going to die eventually.

I had a 80gb old skool seagate barracuda and its still going strong not inside comp but it served 40k hours ,, my other WDC I took out had 50k hours on it. So their still working.

Now adays you buy a external maxtor or seagate you get a cheap product IMO. that will soon fault.

I am with you on that. My other two internals are WD and have been running solid for 3+ years. Which is why I was so miffed when a 2 month old drive simply blinked out.

Really got me. Not that I had anything "Important" on it, but I was playing a game and had already invested 20 plus hours in it. Not important enough to restore the data, but frustrating in that now I have to go back an re-play the game from beginning.

Anyway, so the consensus is that it is dead? Anyone know what Seagate is like dealing with their Customer Service? Is it worth trying to get fix/replacement? or do I chalk it up to learning experience?

i just file an rma and say drive is not spinning up (Always the same answer).

always get an immediate RMA and a quick turnaround for the refurb drive replacement.

usually return to reseller < 30 days after shipped = new drive from reseller - otherwise you get a refurb. that is how seagate rolls. even with very expensive 600GB SAS 15K drives. :(

why would a refurb die soon? it probably has been inspected even more than retail. plus seagate doesn't b/s around with packaging
