1 service = 1 computer ??

In very small enterprises, network are usually setup with only 1 machine. In our case, the problem is that we have 1 warehouse, 14 retail store, 1 head-office and 1 ISP so we have more servers and they are all homemade. The company is slitted in 3 parts : retail computer selling, multimedia and Web site creation and 56k ISP. Currently, we have about 160 employee and we are planning almost twice more in the next year.

* All the store are linked to the server at the head office via ISDN connection. Each store run a 'home' server running Windows 2000.

* The head office use 3 servers sharing a T1 Internet connection. The firts one is a file server, the second is a Web hosting server (with few domains and around 80 web sites) and the tird one is a VPN server. The 2 first computer a greats computers (Dual 700 / 1 gig ECC / Raid 5) and we'd like to keep the stock at least. The firewall is a Cisco PIX.

* The warehouse is running a VPN over a xDSL Internet connection. The orders are send diretly at assembly in the second following the order from the customer.

* The ISP use a multiplex T1 and the computer is an old P2/512ECC/SCSI and MUST be upgraded ASAP. It currently run Linux to serve about 600 customers (56k free Internet access to customers who bough a new computer with us) and use 2 MICA that i hate as hell.

What i'm planning is to setup a 2 Rackmount unit at the head office. One for internal use and the other for the web hosting and ISP. We have a few problem :

1- Should we use a brand name server due to the size and the expansion of the enterprise ?

2- We need something to plug about 140 phone lines for the ISP and i have no clue what hardware we might use for that!

3- We want to run Windows 2000 on all the computer, but i need a Mail server. I've heard of Ms Exchange but i don't really know much about it. Is any other option ?

4- Currently, the network is 100Bt, but i'd like to put the Rackmount unit connected via Gigastack. Any advantage ?

5- How can i skip the VPN with the warehouse ?

6- The file server currently hold 8x Seagate Cheetah 18gig SCSI 160 in RAID 5. Wich case is big enough to put all the drive in the same RAID array in the rackmount ?? (BTW, the Raid card is a Mylex in PCI 64bit falvor)

7- Will i need another firewall or should i updrade this one ? (currently Cisco PIX 1100)

Thx for all

As for your phone line question: You need something that will take about 6 PRI's, which gives you 138 lines. Personally I would recommend the Cisco AS5300 with an 8-port PRI card and either 192 or 216 MICA modems. They also have a new AS5400 product that is pretty sharp as well. Contact several Cisco VAR's in your area and see who comes up with the best price. The 5300 is pretty solid platform. I don't use them in our dialup network simply because we use a Nortel product that has much higher port density. Small ISP's do well with the Cisco 5300.
