This is funny I thought it was going to be derogatory to poor people 🙂
There was a lunch discussion about this once and the one advocate was really a pr!ck to poor people and thought he was so much better than them....
We were all supervisors/managers and directors at this lunch taking out our 'staff' and most of us had been in the poor guys shoes at one point in our lives so the hot-blooded portion of us were plotting serving this guy his ass publically as we all were 'more wealthy' than he was (fresh out of school and in debt a lot still). The lunch was not meant to make the people that worked for us feel any lesser than they already did sometimes.
The attack started after the staff went back to work and we stayed on a bit, the first topic was sheets I think (this is all about 10years+ ago so ...), now many people have to sacrifice on sheets since threads = $, 400 thread count sheets are usually at least double in cost to 200 thread count....going up to 800+TC you start spending major cash (if you don't know about Overstock.com 😉). He didn't even know what kind of sheets he had, and it was like we all acted as if that was blasphemy 😉.
Then shoes came up...this idiot was so impressed with his $100 pair of shoes (in 1990 or so)...so we start talking shoes, $200, $300, $450, one guy had a pair of shoes that were $750....
cars, homes, carpets, vacations, all came up....
It got really stupid quick and the guy got more and more red faced. It was more like the jocks in high school/college (which was what we were) picking on the chess club captain (he was the text book nerd/geek).
He ended up quiting shortly after that as the jokes continued as he tried to upgrade his wardrobe, car and everything else getting his butt in more debt, the guy we think did have a problem and I felt bad about probably helping get him into financial dire straits over what he felt he needed to do to fit in....my one boss would be bad about making others feel slighted, but he always apoligized for it and spent a lot to make up for it (pens, gift cards, lunches, etc 😉 ).
I feel bad for those that *have* to buy 1 ply paper.
