Nice and Simple:

If you have a mobo that has 2 RAM slots which is more efficient for the computer, 1 stick of RAM (512mb lets say) or 2 sticks (of 256mb lets say)?

Use 1 stick: ou can upgrade easily, and it should be slightly faster. I doubt you would notice a difference though.

Well, what motherboard is it? I doubt it's a dual channel board but that's a major issue- if it's DC get two sticks, if it's a regular board then one is probably fine.. There's no real major benefit in 1 stick vs. a pair (assuming that the pair match up specs wise), but keeping a little extra room in the future is worth considering...

Assuming that it is a single channel board than a single module should be both more stable and less expensive -
A single CMX512-3500C2PT($140) module is $10 dollars cheaper than two CMX256A-3500C2PT($75 ea.) modules.
