$700,000 is damn nice to have, but at 21 that is not enough money to just stop working, so she's doing the sensible thing.

but it is... a stepping stone to a better job. spending your time waitressing is a waste at that point unless you think you'll dead end that job for life.

her presence will mock the other workers who have to be there.

1 million isn't even quite enough to retire on at 65 for another 20 years much less at age 21. That isn't even counting how much she'll have after all the smoke clears.

And why would she quit her job to focus on school? She's already getting straight As and she'll probably need that waitress job when she gets done with how things are going these days.

Um, because it's a total waste of time? She should use the time she was working to do internships or volunteer work in her field. Or take more classes to finish her degree and start working sooner. Or maybe pay for a better school than St Petersburg College (assuming she's not getting straight A's in total fluff classes, and she has the academic ability to get into one).

I wouldn't quit either. Place $680,000 or whatever you get after taxes into the bank into a guaranteed return account - something like 3-5% and as long as you aren't killing yourself doing your waitress job - live comfortably. Most people who quit their jobs after a windfall wind up doing crazy amounts of drugs or blowing it all or going fucking nuts from doing nothing but watching Maury and the Price is Right all day.
