3. Is it bad if I do a 5->2 downshift on my Carrera GT?

- M4H

Why would that be a bad thing? So long as you're under 60mph or whatever the GT's 2nd gear speed maxes out at, there should be no problem.

You'd expect me to be under 60mph in fifth gear on a Carrera GT? :D

BTW, spider.

Changing the avatar can't save you now!

You know, I was thinking about buying a used car.

Something sporty.

A two-seater convertible.

Like a Mitsubishi Eclipse.

SPIDER.

- M4H

Hmmm... I'd like a roadster myself.

What's that Toyota one called?

MR2 Spyder?

I pwn you n00bs with my Ferrari 355 Spider. Rollin' on 20's g.

Bah my Lamborghini Murcielago Spider would make you all cry cause of the dust in yo eyes!!

I'd be more than happy with an Alfa Romeo Spyder.

Syringer, you can't escape the spider, no matter (as Lonely Phoenix said) how often you change your avatar.

Well you got to, you know, think about the gas mileage and the environment and all that.

But I guess that doesn't matter in this thread anymore.

It's not a good idea anyway about it. It's more wear on the clutch, and a lot more wear on the transmission. Trust me, I drive 2 stick shift vehicals, and I'm in the process of completely renovating one of them. God the previous owner was an idiot with the poor car.

Remind me to never let any of you borrow my car.

That said, my car is a POS, so I don't know why any of you would ever want to ;)

You can shift without the clutch if you have a non-synchro transmission too, you just need to be _much_ better at rev-matching.

Semi transmissions are non-synchro and the drivers shift without using the clutch. (Except first gear, of course.)

I put 160,000 miles on my Ford Contour, popped it out of gear without using the clutch all the time and the car died because of the alternator - never had problems with the clutch.

In fact, I could shift without using the clutch if the timing was correct.

There is absolutely no wear on the clutch to take the trans out of gear NOT USING THE CLUTCH.

There is also little to no wear on the trans to remove it from gear w/out using the clutch, especially if you do it the way I described above.

on most cars you can shift without the clutch not just on these new snazzy cars. i do it with my old bugs sometimes. its a good thing to learn just incase ur clutch goes out. u have to practice it to get it right. you have to shift at the point in which ur tranny and engine are at the same speed. im sure its diff for every car but i know most cars out there can do it

If the rotational speeds are synchronized, you don't need to press the clutch. Also, if you "ungear" with the engine neither pulling nor braking, you don't need to use the clutch.
However, every single gear shift where the engine speed and wheels speed differ, there is (quite a bit of) stress on the "dog's teeths" in the gearbox. See www.howstuffworks.com for an explanation of manual gearboxes.
So, you'd better not doing this.
EDIT: about not using the clutch when the engine is off, if it works easy, it's OK. But if it won't work easy, don't force it.

Shifting or pulling the gearshift into neutral without declutching is harmful in two ways ;

1)The shift dogs are going to wear their sharp edges down thus eventually causing the tranny to pop out of gear when under a load.

2)The cone clutches are going to seeing scoring on their surfaces causing hard shifting.

3)These little particals of metal that are shearing off find thier way into the bearings and countershaft sleeves which will cause rapid wear.

Even with no load on the tranny on the input side? Sure there's load from the wheels...

I've unkowingly shifted my Jetta from 2nd to 3rd before without using the clutch. Didn't make any noise or act weird, but I started freaking out after I realised what I had done even though there was no cause for concern.

If thats all it can do tops in 2nd gear, then I am totally unimpressed. Hell, my Honda does 85 in 2nd.
