1. Is it bad I pull the car out of gear without clutching?

Haven't done it, don't want to try it, but want to know what would happen?
Is it bad for the tranny?

2. Also, is it bad to shift the gears when the car is off without clutching?

Car is parked, clutch pedal not depressed, move gears in and out gates.

Rephrased questions to make them less confusing.

Mind you, it's not TERRIBLE for the tranny, there are many worse things.

But if it's at all bad, why do it?

depends. I can shift a beetle without ever pressing the clutch. it's all about timing and syncing. you have to 'feel' the car.

Isn't this called power shifting? Or is this shifting without letting off the gas?
nvm
Speed shifting is when you shift without letting up on the throttle.
Power shifting is when you shift without letting up on the throttle, and without using the clutch.

It can be done, but is very hard on the transmission. Most people who do this become expert transmission rebuilders (or simply broke, or both) in a short period of time.

I do it sometimes, not often at all though, as long as you don't do it a lot, the car will be just fine

The Money Shift. ;)

In other news, urinating in your car's gas tank is advised against by most manufacturers...

Why would that be a bad thing? So long as you're under 60mph or whatever the GT's 2nd gear speed maxes out at, there should be no problem.

You'd expect me to be under 60mph in fifth gear on a Carrera GT? :D

1. Doesn't hurt a thing to pull the shifter out of gear without the clutch, especially if you do it right when you let off the gas. There's a moment where there's no pressure on the drivetrain (it's unloaded) from either accelerating or decelerating....it will pop out as easily as if you had the clutch pushed in. Someone mentioned that you have to "feel" the car....that's what they're talking about.
You can also shift the trans w/out the clutch in a similar fashion.
Anyway, you can take the trans out of gear w/out the clutch with no problem.

2. Shift all you want w/out the clutch when the engine's off. No problem.

1. No as long as you don't press accelerator pedal in the same time. On the other side is bad to put the car in a gear without clutching because is very hard to synchronise gears before engaging just " by feeling it "
2. No as long as the car is not on a ramp because in this situation your transmission keeps it against moving. If you have parking brake on, your transmission will not be under tension and the gears does not move (engine off) so does not matter if you engage them or not.

Think about this: you have inside transmission 2 gears ( making very simplistic ): one connected to the engine and rotating at the engine speed and the other one connected to the wheels rotating at the speed of the wheels. Between the gear and the engine you have the clutch. The clutch disconect the gear from engine and let it syncronize in speed with the pair gear so you will be able to engage them. If they are allready engaged they are rotating allready syncron each other so it is not important to press the clutch pedal. Just don't press the accelerator because that will put the engine gear under tension and pulling off gear will be difficult and riskier to damage gears. If you hear that "crrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" noise that mean one gear has higher rpm than it's pair gear and they touched each other. Happens mostly when you try to engage them without clutching

All the above refers to standard manual transmissions but I think the newer transmissions have more protections build in.

Just to be safe keep using the clutch. When the car is off, stop changing gears, the stick shift is not for "mixing the gas in the gas tank"

Happy driving.

Fvcking up shifting while using clutch: Wear on the clutch. This part is intended to sustain wear and can be replaced for a few hundred.

Fvcking up shifting without using clutch: Wear transmitted directly to syncros and tranny. Much badness will ensue after one-too-many mistakes.

Use the clutch, that's what its there for.
