1 in 3 US counties are now dying

A record number of U.S. counties — more than 1 in 3 — are now dying off, hit by an aging population and weakened local economies that are spurring young adults to seek jobs and build families elsewhere.

New 2012 census estimates released Thursday highlight the population shifts as the U.S. encounters its most sluggish growth levels since the Great Depression.

"These counties are in a pretty steep downward spiral," said Kenneth Johnson, a senior demographer and sociology professor at the University of New Hampshire, who researched the findings. "The young people leave and the older adults stay in place and age. Unless something dramatic changes — for instance, new development such as a meatpacking plant to attract young Hispanics — these areas are likely to have more and more natural decrease."

In the last year, Maine joined West Virginia as the only two entire states where deaths exceed births, which have dropped precipitously after the recent recession. As a nation, the U.S. population grew by just 0.75 percent last year, stuck at historically low levels not seen since 1937.

Chattahoochee County, Ga., home to Fort Benning, was the nation's fastest-growing county, increasing 10.1 percent in the last year.

The Country is dying off especially the Middle Class.

And to finish it off the Military is being grown to knock off any dissenting citizens to the new order of the Super Rich and the Super poor with nothing in between.

In all honesty, this has been going on since the 1970s and 1980s. One thing that has changed recently is the baby boomers are starting to die off.

Pretty sure I warned about this years ago.

The idea of a Middle Class is in direct conflict with the Progressive agenda. The idea that a class of people could be entirely self-sufficient and in no way reliant on the government for anything other than protection from foreign entities just pisses liberals off to no end.

Their entire platform is based on "government will provide, government knows best" and the fact that people can survive without government in their daily lives contradicts and invalidates their platform at its core foundation.

So, their task over the last 12 years and over the next 4 will be to destroy what's left of the middle class so that they can bring about their authoritarian government without hiding it in the shadows of seemingly benevolent laws.

I'd think this has more to do with people moving to population centers instead of small towns. With farmers going to the way side and technology improvements this is not really a shocker neither is Dmcowen posting bullshit about military suppression.

Fort Benning growing that fast is probably because of the realigned unit structure we have been going through the last 10 years. It's probably the same for other bases around the country where new / old BCTs have been moved too. Fort Belvoir, VA for instance is going through an absolutely enormous surge of new units, troops, and workers.

In all honesty, this has been going on since the 1970s and 1980s. One thing that has changed recently is the baby boomers are starting to die off.

Even before that, I would say one of the big ones came about from the Depression and then there has been a steady decline in rural populations as farming becomes more industrialized and requires fewer people. Considering the continual decline of places like Detroit, Gary and Flint, this shouldn't come as a huge surprise. Particularly when you take into account the continual decline in birthrates in other industrialized countries. It's been widely reported that the US population is being shored up by immigrants and increased birthrates in immigrant families. This may have distracted people from the fact that there is going to be a continual decline in areas that are not attracting immigrants or new jobs to counter the aging population and low birthrates.

In regards to Columbus, GA, the main reason why Benning and other bases are seeing a huge increase has to do with the fact that the military are closing bases and consolidating the displaced troops into other bases. Columbus has known about the incoming boom for many years though I don't know if they were able to take the appropriate steps in building up the infrastructure in anticipation.

So I don't think this trend should be shocking and it has more to do with the general demographics that many industrialized countries are now facing. Still, the US has a history of migratory demographics and stories of boom towns and ghost towns are part of its history. The only main concern I would have is the fact that we now have bust towns of large sizes like Detroit.

Anyone who thought Bush was a conservative in anything other than social issues is a moron. As such, I used the terms "Liberals" and "Progressives" rather than "Democrats."

Both sides are equally culpable because both sides want the same thing: more power for themselves.

Ahh the old RINO talking point. Yes Bush was a RINO and the republicans in congress that pushed his agenda? RINOs too?

What else would you like to redefine to prove your point?

I see, so in your original post it was the liberals and their agenda that was the problem but now you realize your error. We call that back tracking.

Are you intentionally stupid or something?

Last I checked, the Patriot Act received support from Democrats as well as Republicans. The bailouts, too. Obamacare? Yep.

Pretty much everything that takes choice, rights, and responsibilities out of the hands of citizens has had cross-aisle support, whether you choose to see that or not.

Your willful ignorance of these things doesn't make them any less true.

Bush and Obama are two sides of the same coin and the legislature has not changed substantially in the last 12 years, nor will it in the next 4.

I'm not disputing that both sides are to blame. I'm disputing your ORIGINAL claim that's its all the liberals fault. Do I need to quote your original post again? Or are you intentionally being stupid or something?

He is a leftwing hack what else do you expect from them?

Its interesting how the democrats who claim to be pro civil liberties were furious with bush and said he trashed the Constitution but nothing when that piece of shit obama does it. They also voted for the patriot act and NDAA. Lets not forget the bailouts and obamacare.

I have been saying this all along that both parties are corrupted but too many morons on here are too stupid to understand that and will resort to personal insults. Bunch of pathetic pieces of shit.

If things are this bad now, just imagine how horrific things would be had the dems actually been in control the whole time. I shudder when I think of it - The Revelation of John pales in comparison!!!1!11!

This could describe the entire state of Illinois.

Sounds like a liberal utopia!

This often has to do with High Taxes. Liberals raise the taxes and then they all move to where there is very low tax and then they try to ruin that location also.

I grew up in a small town. My high school had 600 people when I was there. Now it has 300. There's just nothing motivating people to move to the area to counter all the kids moving to the city after graduating high school.
