1 Gigabyte of Memory for games

If you game a lot and need high settings then no it isnt overkill. If you dont need high settings with everything then 512 is usually ok.

IMO, with today's games (many of them mentioned already) 1GB of memory is definitely not overkill.

If you're not a gamer, don't do video editing and just surf and do Office Apps, then 512MB is more than enough.

I guess my philosophy is: If you've spent all that cash building a killer gaming rig, why would you risk loosing gaming performance by not installing a gig of RAM? Just doesn't make sense to me. 🙂

It's just that I'm going to be upgrading soon & want to make sure that the ram is the best & that I have enough for future games .

Mushkin is what I'm looking at but it's pretty steep in terms of cash , but then again I don't upgrade that often . What diff. in performance will I see by going 222 rather than 232 ? Is it worth the extra $60. ?

Any other suggestions in terms of ram that's cheaper & better than the ram below ?

1GB PC3200 DDR 232 Level 1 (2x512) - $ 297.00

1GB Dual Pack (2x512) PC3200 DDR 222 Special-new product - $ 357.00

I agree that 1 Gig is not overkill, actually for my Lan Party rig, I put 2 gigs of DDR 400 just to be sure, can't have a stutter at a lan party 😉

A gig is exacellent. 2 Gigs is definitely stupid and overkill, but 1 gig is great. I have another 512 stick of 3500 i popped in for testing and i was amazed at the NO stuttering in far cry 🙂

Yes, while running nothing else (no systray crap or TSR's) but Far fry and Windows 2000, I use 700 meg of memory. When I went to a gig, the stuttering went away. Its a must nowadays for many games.

I've come across two games recently that convinced me to go 1gig, FarCry and UT2004 (nevermind the Battlefield series). The difference is VERY noticable.

Actually, 768mb is probably enough, but why bother with such an incremental upgrade. Go for the gig.

UT2004 is actually the reason why I'm upgrading to a gig of ram. The load times are unbearable. And starting off is like my system is passing a kidney stone for the first couple of minutes. Once I minimized it and open the task manager to find out my memory was maxed out and the page file was at 500MB. I don't know if there's gonna be a patch to address this, but IMO recommend to get a gig of ram especially if you play ut2004

If you are running games like the two you mentioned I would definately get 1 gig. We have done enough testing in our labs to know 1 gig of memory is the best for overall performance. Any more and you are just throwing megs at the machine unless the programs you are using require it.

For games like Far Cry, yeah, you need 1 gig for smooth gameplay. Same if you are planning on playing Doom3 / HL2 / any other next-gen game.

Reboot your pc then run a few of your favorite games. Afterwards, check the "performance" tab of your task manager. Look at the "Peak Commit Charge". That's the max value of physical memory your pc used since the last reboot. Use that as your guide to how much memory your system wants.

Mine, for example, has 649400 under peak commit charge (after playing only Far Cry since the last reboot), but I have 1048048 of physical memory, so I've got more memory than XP needs to run the game. That's what you want.

Of course, you can use this little tool with any apps. Video/photo editting, gaming, whatever. You'll always have a good idea of how much memory your system is using so you can take appropriate action (like buying more memory as your needs change).

For todays some of todays games and most of tomarrows games a gig is perferable as everyone else has said.

Yep like everyone said it's getting to the point of nessecity for the near future.
Remember we're in anticipation of HL2,DOOM3,STALKER and many other titles that will make efficient use of 1gb of ram.

absolutely,

win xp i normally use 473 mb for everyday stuff with only 512 mb i do notice slowdowns when gaming
i run seti and lifemapper in the background 24/7 and am running service pack2 so....
as always ymmv.
