1 Gigabit Chips are HERE!

Well, they've been here... but they're going full blast now.

Samsung ramps up 1Gb DDR chip output

About time those things go into MASS Production.

8 chip - 1GB Modules are just around the corner. And they will be CHEAP CHEAP soon enough.

One day soon, I WILL own a computer with 3GB of Memory. What will I do with it? Probably the same thing I do with my 200GB of hard drive space... sit there and stare at it is about it. 😀

Seriosly, I don't think it would be practical right now, but I could find ways to "tweak" my computer to use such GOBS of memory.

😀

FINALLY,

<- 1 GB is serving me fine now, but at least i can throw another 1 GB stick in if needed...

🙂

Time for Kingston, Corsair and OCZ to follow...

😀

It's DEFINITELY about that time...
Yes, that's current pricing for SODIM modules...
I expect to see Regular PC2700 DDR 1GB dimms to be priced at around $150 real soon.

Two words: ram drive. 🙂

I'm looking forward to this... especially if they can drive cost down to where 2x1GB sticks aren't too expensive.

I hope so as of now its $1200-$2000 for 4GB of PC2100

As a matter of fact, they are priced around $150 right now. A quick pricewatch pull reveals several vendors who list 1Gb PC2700 CL2.5 chips. I cannot vouch for these chips, but I have been waiting for comments from someone who has taken the plunge. Since the prices will probably rise in the short run, I am an inch away from ordering a stick to run dual channel in my nf2 with my existing 2x512. Nf2 boards with 4 memory slots are starting to appear -> 4 gigs of ram! Did someone say 64 bit?

I thought that for dual channel operation, you had to have an even number of DIMMs installed so I don't know if that setup would work. Might want to double check that one first. 4 GB is the limit for 32 bit processors, so you wouldn't need a 64 bit chip to access a 4x1GB setup.

In a 3 slot nf2 board, you can run dual channel with all slots populated so long as each bank has the same amount of ram. I have confirmed this myself runnin 2x256 with 1x512, with the 2x256 in the 2 slots adjacent to each other.

The 64 bit plug was a joke. I know you can address 4gigs with 32 bit address space 😉

Just play sim city 4 and make a really really big city... that would eat up a little memory... and let seti take half the memory...

Actually, since you realistically only need roughly 1GB of memory, you could create a 2GB ram drive upon startup. And then put your swap file on the RAM drive (some games REQUIRE the use of a swap file), as well as working files for Photochop, AutoCAD, etc. Its a really nice thing. 🙂

there's been 1gig sticks on the crucial uk page for my mobo for months - although now theyre like £217 for pc2100 instead of £700 :Q 😎

Anyone interested in being the guinea pig? My main concern is that the 'generic' 1Gb sticks are reprogrammed 2100 which might be unstable at CL2.5. I'm surprised there has not been more discussion about these cheap 'generic' 1Gb sticks (I searched). Anyone have experience with these?
