I just recently had an offer to buy 512 meg more of PC2100 ram, which
would put my box at 1 gig of ram.
My question is, how much will this benefit windows xp pro?
Right now my page file is set 512/512 on my cd drive.

Anyone have experiences upgrading from 512 to 1 gig with windows xp?:D

You will only see the benefits if you multitask ALOT! I run 1GB in my boxes and really only tap into it running VMWare.

I would set the swap as 1024/1024. You should see a bit of a performance increase. Allowing Windows to dynamically resize the page file eats up clock cycles.

Best of luck!

I use 1 gig on one of my pc's but set the pagefile to 128/128 (max/min).

Why do people "worry" about what to set the page file at when running an OS like 2K or XP? If you've got the RAM, it doesn't matter!

It's not going to make any difference what-so-ever if you've got like 512+ ram.

Worrying about a pagefile is sensless if you have a fast computer and loads of ram.

Let it go. ;)

Gizbuz, go into taskman and take a look at the peak memory usage number after you've used your machine for a day (normal activities). If that peak number is the highest amount of memory the machine used since booted. If it's close to or over 512meg, add the memory. If it's much less, don't bother (unless you think your usage habits will change).

I run 1gig on my laptop, wife's desktop, and 2gig on mine. But like starwarsdad I run a number of vmware sessions on each.

I only have 896 because I got a great deal on a 512 stick and I had 384. I would have lived with 384 until the sticks got cheap.

Yes 1 gig is a good thing if it doesn't bankrupt you.

Wow I never knew you could easly find your peak memory usage. Hmm I have 512 and my peak is 808... Hmm must be from running Rino3d, D2OL, Photoshop, Outlook, and a tons of IE windows. But still how do I get 808....

Make sure your MOBO can handle 1 Gig... Most of the newer ones that accept PC2100 will, but I've seen a few that can only take 512. Just something to think about.
