I am so happy to be able to post this. I have had my computer for about 4 months. My first cpu would only do 850mhz at 43C at idle. I bought a new case and built 3 more for friends. I switched one of the cpu's and got it to do 950 although i ran it at 900mhz. The cpu was much cooler in my fong fai 320 case. It ran at 39C at idle and 40-41 under load. I did notice that while booting it would hold for a second or two at the windows login screen until I moved the mouse back a forth a little. When I installed windows ME it was a a speed that was really too high for the earlier cpu that was in the computer. I think this might have added to the problem but everything seemed fine. Well I got a new IBM hard drive and reinstalled windows me. Guess what? There is no longer the pause at the start and now i boot right into windows at 1 gig with no problems at all. The cpu looks to be idling at 42C. I think that is not bad at all! I guess it goes to show that the operating system could be the cause of overclocking problems. I do not know what that pause was during the loading of windows but it affected my ability to overclock this duron 600. Does this temp seem pretty good to you guys?

Yeah, it looks pretty good to me.
What motherboard and what cooling system are you using? I'm thinking to buy a duron 600 and oc it ...

You will have to get brave! I have done 5 systems with durons and never broke one. I have also taken mine out 4-5 times. You just have to be careful. They will break from what I hear but they are not that fragile. good luck!

gplracer is right: just go for it. Take your time and be reasonably careful. I've done a few of them myself now and they've all gone smoothly. I've had a Duron 700 running stable at 1083MHz for over 3 months now so it's definitely possible -- and worth it.

Like gplracer and Dan said, just be careful... At first I was scared sh1tless of taking the Super Orb off my T-Bird 900 (fearing breaking the processor when I put it back on), but once I did it, it wasn't so bad.

Just giving my 2¢...

Last time I checked, those Fong Kai cases cost around $80~$100 (US dollars).

The Thunderbirds are so cheap now, so you could've used your existing case and get a Thunderbird 900 or 1000 MHz for about the same expense.

But if you have fun by overclocking, that's a different story. :)

Joohang that is a very good point. You are correct about the price of the fong kai case, but I am not sure if t-brid would have gotten too hot or not. I also sold my case for $45 to help make up the difference. I will say that overclocking is just luck of the draw. I have done several of these and this cpu is the only one that would do 1 ghz. Most of the others would only do 850-900mhz. I also paid $30 for the alpha pal cooler so really the cpu cose me $100 when I bought it several months ago. I will say that when I bought the cpu 1 ghz cpus were a lot more money. I think they were about $350. Right now I would consider a t-bird if I was doing it again. Although the duron is still cheaper.

Any story for Duron 850 (retail-box)?

I had a duron 700 @ 1068 stable, it was running hot, like 47c, so I reapplied themal paste. When I put the water block back on I tightened it too much and snapped the lug on my kt7raid and crushed the core. so be careful with them

Congrats on getting it up to 1ghz, I have almost exact same setup. I have a KT7A with a 600 duron but I had problems after 976. So I am happy at 952, with my fsb at 136 (133+3)* 7. I also lucked out and bought cheap PC133 earlier before all the good stuff's price dropped :{. And this board is letting me 4k page and 4x interleave it at CAS 2 on medium memory setting. All of this, is rock stable tested by torture test on Prime95. 976 seemed stable, nothing crashed or anything but in Prime I got rounding and other type errors. So I know was a touch too fast. Waiting with case open for my new case and new fans to come so i can close this noise beast of mine. Lookin forward to my water cooler project, just to shut those fans up.

May the clock be with you!!!!

P.S. Onvia is still a cool place for parts, shippin is still free, so my case didn't have that added $20 dollar cost. Well they ain't paying me so thats enough of an ad. HEHE
