I made my friends computer today, and I started it up and loaded win2k. But when I install something it crashes. The temp on the computer is 60 degrees C, so I think that is the problem. What ways can I cool it off?

Buy a new heatsink/fan? (Super Orb?)
Can I try to reinstall the heatsink/fan that came with the processor?
Get rounded cables?

Any help will be great!

Check & make sure it is seated(making good contact)properly, however you don`t say what motherboard you`ve so here is the recommended AMD list for heatsinks/fans,btw do you know what heatsink/fan it`s?

you can do better than a super orb... maybe the taisol cgk, it's nice and quiet and does great cooling (so i hear), or the fop32...

You reading on the A7V through the BIOS will probably be a little high. I have built three 1 GHz systems with the retail HSF (Taisol 733) and your readings should not be that high. I would check to make sure it is properly mounted and the plastic overlay tape is off (several people have forgotten).

he should have the taisol CEk733092.

We need some more info, though... Like Motherboard BIOS version, the TEMp reading software, and What is your mb/system temp?

I have a new 1GHZ T-bird and an ASUS A7V. I'm using 1004B bios and version 2.12.03 of the ASUS Probe PC monitoring software.

The ASUS probe says my CPU temp is 68 degrees Celcius (154 degrees centigrade). I get this reading (give or take a few degrees) every time I check. MB temp is 38 degrees.

For the most part the system is stable, though it locks up in IE about twice a week.

But from what I'm reading those temperatures are really high and I'm a bit concerned.

I also remember reading though that there's a version of ASUS probe that gives innacurate temperature readings. Does anyone know which version that is?

thanks,

Dan.

Sleater,

What heatsink are you using? Those temps are very high, considering your case temp seems fairly normal(p.s., how's the case cooling?)

I can't remember what the heatsink is called, probably orb something, it was about $25 CDN ($15 US)

And its only got a CPU fan, there's no power fan or chassis fan

The temperature reading in the bios is a few degrees lower than the ASUS probe.

I need more cooling don't I?

thanks

You need a FOP32 or something else ur gonna see some fireworks or smoke or something. I wouldn't even have that computer turned on right now until u get a new heatsink. You should also have atleast 2 case fans, maybe some 120mm panaflos if u have room for them.

I got the lian-li Pc-60 case, 2 intake fans and 1 exaust fan. Well now that I know the heatsink is busted with the motherboard clips.. all I can do now is get a new mobo and FOP-32 or 38.

Sleater,

Yeah, more cooling would be good. You're also at the edge of the Chrome-orbs effectiveness level. Any overclocking and the orb will likely not perform at all within amd specs.
