1 Gb Vs 2 Gb Ram

1 GB ram with latency 2-2-2-6

compare with

2 GB ram with latency 3-3-3-7

Assume your AMD64 system only use 2 slots for ram.

Which one do you think it will perform better in gaming for games like MMORPG? I know there there is a thread that talks about low latency gaming only give mininmal performance boost. But we all know that MMORPG maps eat resources like crazy. Longer the load time = More the lag.

The most important factor here is, everywhere you walk in the worlds of MMORPG, it will goes VERY SMOOTH even there are lots of players around in city, in fighting area, in big battle, etc

Please share your personal experience, thought, valuable suggestion.

Strictly talking about my laptop, I noticed a big difference when I added the Corsair XMS when playing WoW.Before the upgrade, I used to have lag issues in the game but now they are minimal. I highly recommend low latency RAM to any DT or laptop.

I mean yes the game still skips and lags in places (not video card or connection related). Also I can fill up 1.5GB not in a game in no time.

Isn't the map is bigger = eat more resources = more ram would be better?

the 1GB, unless you have got a Venice A64 cpu (and you are on A64) the command rate will hamper the RAM if you have 4 sticks. The only game that pushed my system ram was HL2 and MOH😛A (last PC, not this one) and they chewed about 900MB/1100MB respectively

when running WoW, or EQII or whatever, alt-tab out and open task manager...go to the resources tab, and see what your total commit is. If its more than about 1.2GB, then you need more than a GB of ram. The lowered latency is worth the less RAM, IMHO, although if you're willing to spend, PDP has a 2GB kit thats 2-3-2-6.

I don't have WoW or Eq 2 ..... ^_^

So if you're not running an MMORPG then, why are you asking if you need more RAM? I just made the jump from 1GB to 2GB for WoW, and it's definitely smoother where it would chug before.

so that's why you got the gig stick... i would have assumed low latency would have made a big difference in WoW playing; doesn't WoW only take 700-800mb max? did you turn off Page File?

Ya, I've tried tweaking it to hell and back. But in the end, when you've spent an afternoon romping through the Eastern Kingdoms with settings cranked to max, WoW simply caches too much data and starts chugging when entering areas with a large number of players or taking a gryphon flight(I've caught it eating every byte of physical memory it can get). This problem isn't nearly as pronounced with 2GB, and any possible performance decrease(there shouldn't be, my timings are the same) would be against a normally massive framerate(X800 Pro). Besides, I have some VMWare stuff I'm going to start doing next month for a project, not to mention the HDR HL2 maps, so I would have needed the RAM anyhow.😛

Cux I am about to get WOW but I dunno if I should upgrade my ram.

I only have 256 MB ram.......and I will need to buy new ram anyway......

and this also help to answer lots of ppl whether if 1 GB ram is enough.

According to your exp with WOW, 1 GB obviously is not quite enough ^_^

Do yourself a favor & get 2gb of RAM if you're a MMORPG gamer. 1gb might hold up, but I have read over & over people saying 2gb is best for MMO's. Personally, I am a 1gb low latency guy because I play shooters & such where speed is crucial, but if I were into MMO's exclusively I would have bought 2gb without question. Once you get 40, 50, 100 people on your screen, your RAM will need that extra gb to run all the info for all the players.

I wasn't sure it would make much of a differance or not but figured I would try upping from 1gig of ram to 2gig of ram for Starwars Galaxies, because it seemed to be using the page file when loading areas with a lot of buildings, or large amount of players, and I would get lag. I was plesently suprised at the improvement I got from 2gig of ram, no more lag, and no more paging. My ram timings are at 3-4-4-8, with a 230mhz FSB.(but I have a P4 with 4x512mb sticks)
