Well I think this is really hot, since the new rio 800 extreme for 384mb is like $600 anyways theres a player: Nex II

and it pretty much takes a whole type of crapload of different media including IBM microdrive 1gb :)

Here's a link to the manufacturer

Mp3.com Review

The player is only $99 and the new ibm microdrive can be bought on certain auction sites for less then $400

first post on a good deal well i think it is :)

I didn't know they actually released the 1Gb microdrives. I hope they last longer than 75GXPs :)

this should eat through batteries like nothing else, microdrives eat alot of juice since they are mechanical

Is the adapter for the clik discs available yet? Does anyone know how much the adapter will/costs? It seems the clik discs are available now, but the review says you need an adapter for it.

hmmmm...on the listed accessories that are included with the unit it doesn't say anything about the batteries. I thought it came with rechargeable batteries....and it doesn't say anything about ac operation and doesn't say anything about being able to use a wall outlet to powere the unit. I'm not that familiar with mp3 units....i have an md player/recorder and it has rechargeable batteries and the recharging power base to hook to the wall to recharge and/or use off ac to run it if need be. Can anyone shed some light on the ac/dc properties this unit has/doesn't have? thanks

excerpt (is that spelled right?) from the mp3.com review

Over five times the play time compared with players that use one AAA battery.

so normal batteries

WOW!!

damn that's amazing, 1gig of mp3s in your hand! They're on the right track but there's a few problems

Too bad USB is only 1.5 mega/byte second, so basically it'd take at least 11 minutes to fill 1gig up and that's at if it went full speed, I'd be surprised if it went half that speed (my 64meg Rio 500 takes about 5 minutes to fill up), so basically you'd probably want a external firewire compact flash drive to transfer mp3s to the drive, then put the drive in the Nex II.

Using two AA batteries was very smart, that actually makes the microdrives a possibility, sure they eat batteries but most mp3 players out there are just 1 AA and how long do they last? ~10 hours? Site says 2 AAs should last 15 hours using a CF card, so even if the microdrive eats double the power that's still 7 hours before you have to pop another two AA batteries in there. I'd say it's worth the poor battery life for the extra music.

CF was smart too, it's soooo much better than smartmedia, not only will CF type I soon go all the way to 512megs (the largest smartmedia card is 64megs) but it's also much cheaper, 128megs can be had for <$80.

I can't think of anything wrong with this player, sounds perfect to me and I hope the rest of the developers out there follow suit.

Anyone ever check out the Archos Jukebox 6000? Why deal with a micro drive.... I purchased the Archos Jukebox 6000 two months ago and have had only minor problems with it. BTW yes 6000 means it has a 6GB laptop HD installed but it can be upgraded to a 20GB or even 30 if the drives are now available (2.5in size). These run $275 to $350 and their new unit has the ability to record! Enjoy! Archos Home Page Linkified

yea, you can get the laptop based mp3 players but the thing with this player is that its the small kind, can fit into your pocket, I had a neo 25 (just sold it T_T)but its big and bulky, it can fit in my pocket sure but its not the small kind

the Archos looks pretty small actually, not too much bigger than a rave 2100.

but this seems pretty nice for the price.. 64MB of CF is so cheap these days.

also, where are you getting it for $100? The reviews for it w/ the microdrive seem sub-par... altho, i'd go for CF anyway. Also, doesn't seem to have any win2k support... NO GOOD :(

BTW, smartmedia hits 128MB (maybe more, but i know they sell 128MB), just a matter or prices tho.

Still looking for some input on whether i can use nimh batteries in this unit. I know it won't recharge them but is there any problem using the nimh rechargeables in it? I'm thinking you can but i've noted some things say not to use them (like the handspring visor deluxe....but my stepdad is using nimh in it). thanks

It doesn't say in the system requirements (or anywhere else i've looked) if nimh rechargeables can be used in the unit.

Forget this, spend $200 less and get 6x the storage (possibly even 20x)...Nomad Jukebox is the way to go.

Inguyen, exactly.

Why have a mp3 jukebox that's the same size as a portable CD player? I want it to be the size of a cassette or smaller - and the Nex 2 is.

Of course Win2k support is included. It uses USB to connect and Media Player 7 or Media Jukebox to transfer. Win2k supports all of these things.

I currently transfer MP3's to my CF on my iPaq using Media Player 7 on Win2k. It works beautifully.
