This is an odd problem, upon a fresh boot i can launch NV with no problems. Once i exit and try to play again i get a windows error stating that "Fallout New Vegas Launcher has stopped working." The prompts are "check online for a solution" and "close the program." So, i went directly to the executable in steam/steamapps/common/fallout/FalloutNV.exe. That worked once, but then i got the same application error on a second attempt. Currently, when i reboot the launcher works fine, but only once. Any idea what is going on here? NV is updated (via Steaming pile), nVidia drivers are fresh, and im running win7 Pro x64.

Edit: Setting the "launcher" and executable to XP SP3 compatibility mode fixed the problem.

Weird...I had that error once when launching from Steam (same OS/drivers) but was able to launch when I tried again

Did you do anything different the second time? Im not sure what "verify steam files" means.

Go to Library
right click on F:NV
select Properties
Local Files
click on Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

Thanks, i figured that out a little while after posting. Did not work. What i did try that has a little more success is compatibility mode set to XP SP3 on both the "launcher" and executable. It worked once (meaning it launched without a reboot), cant say if it has solved my problem though since i have not tried it again. Im guessing that since they developed the game for out dated hardware, why not an outdated OS too? I used to play DOS games and it came up during a discussion with a friend. I hope this is the final solution...

I was having a similar issue and just trying a few times it eventually works. Win 7 x64 with nvidia drivers as well. Seems its just temper mental and I never reboot my machine.

Side note, im using 8800gt vid card with probably out of date drivers and have 4gb ram, gigabyte mobo, and intel core 2 duo processor. One of those may be a variable in your setup, not sure.

Tell it to close the program and then try to launch it again. Do you notice after you run it the first time is the process still running in system monitor? It may not be exiting fully.

As a fan and a hater of Fallout NV all at the same time - the game has a lot of kinks to work out at the moment to say the least.

In any case, I find that when you have a CTD, there's no way to relaunch the game without rebooting. Otherwise I can quit and launch the game just fine. I'm even running it on Windows 7 X64 without using compatibility mode as people have suggested and I have tried (didn't do anything for me for the random CTDs).

Win 7 x64 - ATI 5870 though and no startup/video bugs. It seems to me all the people with crashes before getting into the game are due to Nvidia drivers but not totally sure. I still get the occasional CTD and with that d3d9.dll fix the game runs smooth as butter, albiet minor visual anomalies in some rare places. Definately a crappy launch though for a pretty decent game.
