Everything is relative... I drank my first boba nai cha at a night market in Tainan, Taiwan four years ago. My cousin fed this thing to me, and I was hooked!

From my favorite tea stand, 800cc of boba nai cha is NT$35 (US$1.03) and 400cc is NT$20 (US$0.59). You can get it cheaper, but those are the prices from my favorite place... and the worst milk tea I've had in Taiwan is still orders of magnitude better than anything I've had in the States (from Tapioca Express and some local places)!

The difference being that they make this stuff in Taiwan right there in front of you... the tea is brewed and hot, put over ice, milk powder, corn syrup, and FRESH tapioca added; shaken and then strained of the ice.

In the States, they scoop stuff out of a giant bucket and put these soggy brown balls in it. Eeiiwww.

Somehow, the service is also faster overseas... and the girls who work at these places are the real reason I keep going back! :D
Was visiting Taiwan a few months back and yeah their boba is just much better. But someone was telling me it's possible that the way the tapioca balls are made make a difference also the climate of Taiwan. For some reason I had to leave a boba in my hotel room overnight (refridgerators in hotel rooms, why that's a luxury) and the next day it was still chewy. Here if you don't drink it within a few hours they get kinda hard and nasty. But I only drink Tapioca Express anyway (they have the QQest boba I have tried) and I'm really picky.

Hee, 'QQest', maybe some people won't understand that. :) It means 'chewiest', or 'most al dente' in Pasta term. :)

The 'Q' texture is probably differnt from store to store, maybe even varies from day to day. Up here in San Jose area, I like Fantasia and Bambu near my place aint so bad either. But you are right, they all tend to stiff up/disintegrate overnight. Maybe because most of the tapioca balls here are imported and/or frozen. Just don't drink boba from 99 Ranch/Ranch 99/Marina Market. :D

Wow now I want to go to taiwan just so I can feel like a bajillionaire...35 NT to each dollar?! Too bad of course you can still only buy a cup of milk tea, but still.
*fantasizes about walking around with 7000 NT...*

But anyway as far as everything being relative, how true...my school(and that's the University of Rochester, in upstate New York) decided to get in on the Boba action(well ok not my school, more like the food company that runs the coffee shop) and has created boba that is the very meaning of suck. I haven't tried it myself because when 5 people in a row tell you it sucks you tend to want not to try it.

But I do feel this perverse need to find out just how bad it could possibly be and buy one anyway...should I toture myself to find out?

And apparently the people working there are quite unknowledgable about the drink...one of the workers was apparently spewing some crap about the drink coming from Africa. Uhh...right, Africa.
