This seems to be one of the most asked questions which northwood. I just read this Northwood Overclocking Guide and it looks like I might try the 1.8 with some Samsung PC2700 and the MSI 645E Max2. I have experience with the 1.6 and just want to try something else.

Please share your knowledge

If you are going to be buying some new ram, may I suggest that you consider XMS3200.

My True Samsung PC2700 with 2.7v is only able to do CL2-3-6-3 at the higher speeds fsb145-150 3:4 (ie: 387mhz; 400mhz). I am seeing a lot more of the Corsair at 2-2-5-2 at these settings and higher.

I have a 1.8A coming myself tomorrow.

I dont know about the XMS3200 being much better. I have 1 512mb stick and it can only run 2.5-3-3-6 and wont boot set to 2-3-3-6 @DDR 400.

What mobo are u using? I am starting from scratch so I am leaning toward something based on the SIS 645DX chipset.

Stay away from the SIS chipset if you plan on overclocking. It doesn't support the PCI/AGP lock, which is very important.

I am using Gigabyte 8IRXP, which is agreat board...
It has bunch of features, nice OC friendly BIOS, USB 2.0, smart card reader, memory stick reader,
5.1 hardware audio chip by creative, RAID....
There is also a newer version of this board called 8IEXP, with a new E version of I845 chipset which does support
533 fsb "officially"...It is kinda pricey but in addition to all the features I mentioned above, it has also a FireWire brakcet, and chip on board..... It is a great board.. did I mention a dual bios?
If one bios will go bad (due to bad flash for example), there is alway a backup one..:);):(

stay away for the MSI board........decent overclocker but lacks many bios options...........try Abig BG7 or Epox's i845g which both have features galore in the bios for tweaking.

So you are suggesting the new 1 or the 1 you have now? Thanks

What is the best I845 chip right now?

Hmm I guess either one would be just fine.. believe me your are going to like them both...
The only factor is a price, and IEXP is using a slightly newer version of the I845 chipset..
If you dont care about money I would say go for 8IEXP, which has everything you may want in your PC....
It costs $141.00 shipped from Newegg.com......
The IRXP costs $121.00 shipped from Newegg.com....
here
Heck, get the IEXP, because it got very positive reviews over at Toms Hardware Guide. They have done a roundup of 9 diffrient boards, and they liked Gigabyte 8IEXP the best. It is also... cool looking.... :D
conclusion of the article here
and here is the mini review

Also, the Asus P4B533 is a board to seriously consider. It has the AGP/PCI lock. People have been getting some impressive results with that board. Checkout Thugsrook's thread at 180 fsb.

I just read the review. This board rocks but it said it does have the ability to change memory timings, how important is that, I have been running a 512 chip of Mushkin basic at 2-2-2 for 3 months.
