According to some quick Googling, veterans make up 5% of those that committed suicide in the USA in total, yet 12% of the American population are veterans. Additionally, it appears that the majority of veterans currently alive are old and served when the draft was still in effect; how many of these are also elderly and possibly committing suicide for reasons completely unrelated to their service?

EDIT: Although the year isn't half over, so partially-nvm on that point.

It seems our psychological preparation program for combat (COD and BF games) isn't working as hoped...

Until Battlefield splatters you with the entrails of the guy previously standing next to you, there will be no substitute for the real thing.

The article is from end of March, so that's probably a 2 month period
It was done by Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America

It's a huge issue — with more than half of the 2.6 million veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan still struggling with physical or mental health problems — many of which know a fellow service member who has attempted or committed suicide, Washington Post reports.

There is a huge difference between going into battle for a cause you know is right, and one your not sure about
Especially after you have been there and seen things for yourself

If you wanna prepare guys psychologically, lock them in a small room for 48 hours with speakers playing sounds of screaming children and incredibly loud bombs.
Drop pig guts on them by the ton every 30 minutes. Ensure they are steaming hot.

It might be because they miss the war.
The atmosphere where none gives a fuck about anything except staying alive, the license to kill anyone you want (except a fellow soldier), the lack of any social responsibilities, the smell of chaos and indifference in the air. War is something beautiful... well maybe not beautiful, but there is a reason many people love it.
