1.83GHz Macbook with second monitor = choppy sound...

I have a 1.83GHz C2D Macbook with 4GB of ram (3GB usable) and a 320GB hard drive. I just bought a dinky 17 inch Dell monitor that runs 1280 x 1024. If I'm using it, it seems to make my system run like crap...? I can't browse, play music, and run rsync, and leave VirtualBox Windows IDLE at the same time w/o music chopping out and it just running strange. I unplug the monitor and it seems ok? Like 2 years ago I remember doing this with a 1680x1050 monitor but I was using 10.4/10.5.... Is my laptop too old?

How much memory are you giving your VirtualBox VM? Do you still have the problem if you shut down the VM?

I have a very similar MacBook. I run Parallels every day at work, with Windows in an external 17" crappy Dell LCD. I have Mail and Safari running on the Mac side and WordPerfect, IE and my billing program running on the Win side.

I have no problems with music or videos.

is this a macbook pro? iirc the macbook could only have 2gb of memory.

Core Duo MacBook/Pros could only have 2 GB RAM, the first generation Core 2 Duos bumped that to 3GB (3.3GB IIRC). It wasn't until a couple generations later, the Santa Rosa I believe that they got the 4GB cap.
