1-800-contacts

My supply of contact lenses is about to run out. I would like to use 1-800-contacts to order a new supply, but I'm a little confused by the prescription requirement.

The only time I've ordered contacts was after my initial fitting/exam with my eye doctor about three years ago. I've since relocated to a new state, so I cannot go to my original doctor for a checkup. I really don't want to have to find another eye doctor just to order contacts.

Can I just walk into any vision/eyeglass store (e.g., PearleVision) and pay for a basic eye exam? Would that provide me with the prescription I need?

You go to an eye doctor and they check out your eyes. They'll give you a prescription a piece of paper. You then have the choice of walking over to the contacts/glasses section of the store or going somewhere else.

You can go anywhere from Wal-Mart to the fanciest optometrist in town to get a prescription.

Ah. So, those stores all have an eye doctor available if I walk in off the street?

EDIT: Gotcha. I figured as much, but didn't want to look like an idiot when I walked into the store asking for an eye exam.

Whoa whoa whoa!

No need to see a "doctor"

You need to see an optometrist not an ophthalmologist.

Basic contact lens exam should set you bakc $65 - $85. If you have a Costco in your area they oftne have an on site optometrist that does exams and you can buy the contacts direct from Costco which usually has the best prices.

Exam is good for 1yr on contacts and 2yrs on glasses.

I do hate to give the OP shit about things, but in all seriousness how in the heck have you worn contacts and gone thru life without figure out how to do things for yourself?

So, since I had one question about ordering contacts, I am an idiot?

Like I said in my first post, when I got my first supply of contacts, I let my eye doctor take care of it. This is the first time I've ever even had to think about renewing.

While I realize I need a new prescription, which obviously entails an eye exam, it seemed overkill to find a local eye doctor for an exam when I could just walk to my local PearleVision and get an $80 exam and prescription from the doctor next door.

I just go to Walmart Vision Center. Costco has their own vision center too.

Yeah, I ended up at my local SuperTarget. Quite convenient.

If you know your current rx (which should be on your current contact blister cases, -3.00 or something) then you should be set to go. I ordered from 1 800 contacts, submitted my doctor's correct contact info, and then got a message back from 1 800 contacts a day later saying something to the effect of "we couldn't verify your rx but unless we hear otherwise we'll assume it's correct and ship them out." I got them on time. I'd give it a try.

edit: well I guess give it a try next time then

If it's been three years do yourself a favor and get an eye exam. It may turn out that you need a slightly stronger prescription.
