1.6A vs 1.8A ???

Hmmmm,

After reading all the posts in here, I can't decide whether to take the risk of a 1.8A versus a 1.6A if i want to overclock to at least the 133mhz bus....

I've seen more reports of duds in the 1.8A category, but i will be buying early august anyway, and the 1.6A's are being discontinued right?

Any opinions would help...

Also, what mb would you recommend if I want to go the SiS way?

THx

Got my 1.8a at Fry's electronics today, and it won't overclock at all. After 4 northwoods, this is my first lemon. My 1.6a and 2.0a ran at 133 fsb; a 2.26 ran at 145 fsb; this dud will post at 105, but blue screens while loading windows. Check out the epox 4g4a or asus p4s533 for overclocking. The 1.6a is rising in price; you may want to get yours now, or try the 2.0, and not rely so much on overclocking; mine ran fine at 122 (2.44) with a small voltage increase, but required 1.75 volts (net 1.68) to reach 133 fsb.

Get a 1.6A, if you get a recent pack date then you're virtually guaranteed 133FSB or higher with default voltage. The 1.6As have been discontinued but you can still buy them. Don't get a SIS board. Get the EPoX 4G4A/+ or the Abit BG7. You can get the 4G4A+ for about $125 shipped or the 4G4A for about $100 shipped both at MWave.com

Well, I haven't heard of ANY properly set up old 1.6A's that wouldn't hit 133 MHz FSB. So it's not just recent pack dates that are great.

On another note, I have a 1.8A (about 8 months old) that runs constantly (rock stable) at 125 MHz FSB; 2.25 GHz .. it is not 100% stable at 133 MHz FSB, and I'd advise you to stay away from the 1.8A if possible.

I don't necessarily think it won't overclock as much, I think it's because the multiplier is higher, so the steps it has to take are slightly bigger, so when the average chip maxes out, it's not as high as a 1.6a because it has a smaller multiplier. That's my opinion. Doesn't really matter, the 1.6a's have proven themselves...they rock! 🙂
