Now, we're not sure what Gigawire actually is, but we note that it is an Apple technology - at least, the Mac maker applied for the name as a registered trademark on 5 September. The trademark application doesn't describes Gigawire per se but it's clear it's some kind of cabling technology. A faster version of Firewire seems likely, indeed we've already been told that the new machines will ship with IEEE 1394b, which we've heard described separately as "Gigabit 1394". The official 1394b spec., finalised last May, provides for 800Mbps data throughput, rising to 1.6Gbps and even 3.2Gbps with optical cabling.

Our source chooses not to - or (s)he can't - provide more detailed specifications for the Power Mac G5s and their component technologies. Previous reports from the source have claimed the frontside bus is 400MHz and the chip contains 512KB of on-die L2 cache.

2002:

Presumably depending on the yields demonstrated over the coming weeks, the low-end box will go into production on 14 December, followed by the mid-range machine in 20 December. The fastest Power Mac G5 will start rolling off the production line on 3 January 2002, our correspondent claims.

Were't the G5s supposed to be .13 micron SOI processors using an HT link? I wonder why The Register doesn't mention this, because I've seen it mentioned several times on several other sites.

But anyway, it looks like it's time to buy some Apple stock. :D;)

I hope this means I can buy a G5 1.6 GHz iBook with 13" screen by Q3 2003 to replace my current G3 600. Good for Team AnandTech for Dnet. :)

It's Apple, I'll believe it when I see it.

And besides, even if they do make it, there's nothing that says a 1.6 GHz G5 would be any faster than a 1.6 GHz XP or a 2.0 GHz P4, since there's hardly any information available.

Would be nice if they actually came through though, it's been a loong time since Apple was competitive in terms of hardware.
They do have the best consumer OS though :)

The G5 is supposed to have a 10 stage pipeline (the Athlon XP also has a 10 stage pipeline). The G5 will also use DDR, (and maybe an HT link since Apple is a member of the HT Consortium, and also because I remember reading about it somewhere). Also, I read that it might use SOI.

I'm about to buy some Apple stock, here I come. :D

the processor will use a dual-quadruple-tripet pipeline gigabot transistor radio telescope, and pump out a whopping 895^5 tone color casing w/ gigaesthetic mold lines

More like 2005. Remember, these guys are not even close to following Moore's law.

This is actually the second time I have heard these rumors. I'm expecting volume supply G5s should hit consumers March 2002. Probably @ the 1.2-1.4 Ghz range 1.6 seems pushing it.
