1.6 Duron gonna be enough for this build? Opinions please.

Building a new PC for sister/brother-in-law. They are not PC people at all, the only thing they may do that will tax the computer (other than installing spyware & god knows what else

) is to upload footage from their DVI camcorder via firewire, edit it & burn it to DVD. Other than that it will just be surfing the web, e-mail etc.

It's mostly my old parts plus a Fry's combo Duron 1.6 & an ECS K7VTA3.

Other parts:

768MB Crucial DDR 2100
80GB or 120GB 8MB 7200RPM Maxtor
GF3 Ti200
NEC 8X DVD-R/+R
Lite-On 16X DVD

I don't want to get this all put together and find that the Duron isn't up to the task. I know it's a good overclocker but I'd prefer to run it at stock speeds to avoid long-distance tech support if something goes wrong. With CPU prices dropping I can get an XP 2400+ for around $70 and I could probably sell the Duron for $35 - $40.

Thanks

Yea that should be plenty for them.

If in doubt just get the 1.8Ghz Duron, saw them at newegg.com

I tried 4 different k7vta3 motherboards with the duron 1.6 and it wouldn't post about half the time. If you have any problems, take it back to Fry's for exchange. I tried 2 different cases, 2 different name brand power supplies, and 2 different video cards. Don't be surprised if you have problems with this combo. This cpu is so new that the Fry's salesman recommended leaving it underclocked at 100/100. If it posts, I had no problems running it at 166/166 even with pc2100 mushkin memory. The memory will automatically be set at the same fsb as the cpu. It's a characteristic of the motherboard. Good luck.

I've built a few systems based on the ECS KS75A, so I'm used to ECS quirks. Never had a major problem, hopefully that trend will continue with this mobo.

duron is a great cpu. I would do the L2 mod on it to make it a thourobred Athlon XP. now if you were buying the cpu today I would say go to newegg and get a molile 2400 barton for 80 bucks. low voltage so it runs cool unoverclocked and when overclocked yo have alot of headroom
