1.5TB arrives

The most impressive one is the 1.5TB Barracuda 7200.11, the 11th generation workhorse drive for people who download far too much content. It is a 4 platter model that claims a 120MBps data transfer rate. There are 16 and 32M cache versions, both will be on sale, along with smaller 7200.11 variants, this August. We inch closer to 'big enough'.

I think it's getting somewhat ridiculous.

That made me count the amount of my HDD space. lol. I have 4.75 TB physically and 3.25 TB being seen by my systems, due to RAID.

But what I'm wondering is, isn't 1.5 TB is the limit before you have to convert the disk to GPT partition? I don't know where the HDD will go from there. We've already been through the 4GB limit of memory on 32-bit OS, and now we're heading to the HDD limit? I don't know exactly how GPT works (vs MBR), so maybe someone could elaborate on this. What happens when the HDD gets so big and MBR cannot handle it?

It's getting kinda' scary. I haven't used GPT yet, and I'm wondering what happens when you need data recovery and such. I imagine it's like Windows Dynamic drives, where some of the utilities for disk management won't work anymore.

Eh, what joy that will be...

I'd wait for the 2 TB drives if I were you. :p

I tend to run a lean system. OS, bare essential apps and games. If I don't use it, I put it on an external backup drive. I noticed that the larger drive you have, the more useless clutter it tends to gather.

Can't wait to hear all the complaints from people that have lost photos, files, whatever.
People are bad about doing backups now with even a 100GB drive.
I can only imagine how bad it will be with 1.5TB.

Oh well, guess some will learn the hard way.

Yeah, will Norton Ghost 2003 for DOS still work on these monster drives once they hit 2TB and beyond? I can't live without my Ghost!

Well I have no need for such a large drive so it would be throwing away money- if I am going to spend $$ on a HDD it is going to be an SSD in the near future.

What about the business envirmoment. I am doing disk based backup and burning a 1.5TB in a month and half. Not to mention it's only going to grow.

I lost my music once that took along time to amass, now I have at least 3 of everything. Never again will it happen, knock on wood.

I have 763gb on one computer, and 1461gb on this computer. It's not near enough space.

I need about 5 of these 1.5tb drives. What's the actual usable space on these, about 1250-1300gb?

Umm, don't use a single 1.5 TB partition?:)

It's a Seagate, so it comes with a free copy of Acronis True Image, which many, many times better than Norton's Ghost.

To find the usable GiB of any size hard drive or partition after formatting, assuming you're using NTFS, multiply the size of the drive/partition by 92.5%. It won't be exact, but it will be extremely close, like as in only off by a 10th of a percent or so.

Personally I welcome it. As I made another thread about how our lab needs to setup a 24TB file server, this will help substantially.

I certainly welcome these as backup drives. That's the first place that newer, larger drives go in my systems. When they get too small to use for backups, they are moved into the various work PCs.

The best thing about new, larger drives is... that smaller drive will drop in price.

Yep I already ran into a problem with this on my latest mobo swap and OS install. I originally had 2 x Raptor X 150GB and a 750GB F1 Spinpoint. I had the F1 Spinpoint formatted as GPT. After I switched to the new board I wanted to set up the Raptors in RAID 0 and boot from the F1. Except when I went to install Vista, the drive wasn't recognized.

Took me about 15 mins tinkering in the BIOS to realize it wasn't a drive recognition issue, as even Vista set-up allowed me to explore the disk when searching for a new driver. Luckily I remembered something about GPT not being able to serve as boot drive....so I installed the F1 into my other PC and formatted it as MBR. Vista installed on the F1 no problem after that.
