1.5MB/s over G wireless - about right? That seems a bit slow...

I'm getting a pretty consistent 1.5MB/s over my G connection in my house, which seems a bit slow to me. I have a couple of routers connected via bridge mode, good signal, no problems there. Any DD-WRT settings to check that may help overall speed?

I think, however, that I'm running against speed limitations on the G wireless signal as is. So, can anyone recommend a good N based router that can support DD-WRT?

You should be getting around 6.75MB/s peak although I have never seen anything over 80% of peak. The bridging of the routers will probably cut down a little on the speed too.

Draft-N (there is No 802.11n) basically support it self and nothing else.

If you are using WDS 1.5MB/sec. is Good Bandwidth.

Otherwise do not be lazy 😉, and explain better the topology of your Wireless Network.

Do you happen to know if any draft-N routers support DD-WRT? I'm basically looking to send data faster than 1.5MB/s (without running wire obviously).

My setup:

Xbox, HTPC, 360, PS2 connected to WRT-54GL running DD-WRT

Main PC connected to Buffalo router running Tomato (also connected to internet)

WRT-54GL & Buffalo router are connected via wireless bridge.

1.5 MB/s is pretty decent for 802.11G. If you want more throughput force 802.11G mode only on the AP.

Best case throughput is 2.4 MBs on 802.11G

I do not think that any Draft-N has any 3rd party firmware.

I am aware of one Draft-N Bridge. D-Link DAP-1555.

To try to benefit from it you would have to take down all you 802.11G and buy a D-Link Draft-N Router too.

Would it really make a big difference?

I do not know, if you want to spend $300 (on a Bridge Router combo) try it and let us know.

I'm not $300 concerned about the speed, that's for sure. Guess I'll just have to be happy with what I got! Thanks for your input.

You could do it for ~$200 with a pair of SMC's (SMCWEB-N), and if you did, I'd love to hear the results. You might be able to bring the price down further with a cheap older draft-n router and an SMC bridge. The performance, support, compatibility and stability risks would go up, but the price could go down a bit.

There are a couple of draft-n routers which are supported by DD-WRT, but the support is for very specific models and revisions, which might not be easily available and probably aren't cheap.
