It would be great if anyone knew this, it's exactly what I was wondering myself, along with whether it's possible to upgrade from the celeron to the p4. Would help me out a lot in making my decision for a laptop, ^_^

in other words: "bump!"

I would naturally assume that the p4 would smash the celeron.

I doubt there is a difference though with the mobile models...or is there? I usually just thought they had the ability to use "less" power so while you couldn't benefit all 1500mhz you use what you need

lets put it this way the desktop 2.0ghz P4 celeron performs like a 1.6ghz P4 at best (much less in anything that needs cache or is bandwidth intensive)
so I can only imagine how weak a 1.5ghz part would be (prob less than a 1ghz P3)

you'd be better off with a P3 or P4 laptop unless you were just getting it to try to save money in hope of upgrading the processor later

heres tomshardware's benchmarks of a 2ghz P4 celeron
heres anand's 1.7ghz P4 celeron benchs

they both overclock it too so you can see how it scales and compare it to other low/mid budget processors

Makes sense, but what I'm really interested in is whether it's possible to upgrade from the mobile celeron to a mobile p4, and how hard it would be. I've already found out that it's quite a bitch to upgrade the video card, if it's possible at all, but I'm still pretty much in the dark about the cpu. I'm hoping to be able to at least upgrade the cpu so I don't have to chuck this thing in a year or two when apps and games get even more intensive, so if any of you have knowledge about upgrading laptops, in particular the Toshiba Satellite 1115-S123, then I'd appreciate it if you helped me out with some info on whether it's possible or not. If not, feel free to ignore me, :p

as long as the cpu isn't soldered onto the motherboard the cpu is upgradeable. it's a pain to install though, and i don't know where you could buy a mobile cpu. why not just go with an athlon xp laptop?

I highly doubt you would be able to upgrade the CPU in a toshiba laptop. I have a toshiba with a 1.1 celeron and it seems pretty much impossible just to get the thing open. It requires special tools.

call the company you bought yur laptop from they should be able to upgrade the cpu
even if it is possible to open the laptop up and upgrade the cpu yurself (like with my sager) finding one for sale is very difficult
sending the whole laptop in for the upgrade is usually yur best bet

Most companies, at least the major brand names, do not offer cpu upgrades on their laptops. They want you to buy a new model to "upgrade". It's one of the reasons why the laptop market is so lucrative compared to desktops these days.

i have the toshiba satellite 1115 -s103 (yes i wanted the s123 but the hotdealers took them all you lucky bastard).

anyways, the mobile celeron 1.5 has 256k cache, so its a little faster than if it were a desktop celeron (with 128k cache).

i just bought a mobile p4 1.6 M on ebay for $83 shipped. (yes ebay place to go for mobile chips you wont be disappointed). it is in transit, and i also got a toshiba 40gb 5400rpm 16mb cache drive . so when the cpu comes i'm going to do an upgrade guide with my 1115 upgrade. i can see it being more difficult than it could be because i've taken the keyboard out previously and the 1115 is built in a way that this will be difficult.

but i will post pics. it'll be fun

that's why as intelligent consumers we don't buy from those companies
