1.5 TB Samsung EcoGreen F2 HD154UI Slow Access Times

I just picked up a HD154UI and installed Windows 7 on it. The average access times are in the high twenty millisecond range:

Are there any settings I can look at changing or driver updates that could correct this? Or should I return it for another drive (which unfortunately means an hour drive to Frys)?

I have two other HDs in the computer at the moment that both have around 15ms access times.

BTW I reran the HD Tune test booting off of another drive and it got rid of the dips in the transfer rate graph but the access time for the drive is still over 27ms.

That's nearly twice the specced time. Is there any hope for this drive or should I just spend the hour driving down to Fry's to exchange it?

The Green lines of drives are always going to be a fair amount slower then the performance series, but I do not like the look of those random dips in the scan.


I would switch out the drive just to be safe.

Oh ok, you where using it as the boot drive, that explains the dips, either way if the access times are twice what it is specced for, I would return it either way.

My HD154UI scores 33.3ms on HDTune, and it is used only for storage; the actual performance (as a storage drive) is perfectly fine. I am not concerned, although I am curious as to whether AAM is enabled on these drives by default, which would explain the unusually high access times.

Here's what I noticed, when my HD154UI is vertical, my HDTune access scores are in the 24ms and up range. When the same drive is horizontal, the HDTune scores are in the 14ms range. Like most folks, I only use this drive as storage and the difference do not bother me.

My other Samsung drives, HD753LJ and HD103UJ, do not have this peculiar "behavior".

I had the same issue and that's why I found this thread.

I use a Lian Li case in which drives are mounted with rubber rings fitted around the screws to absorb vibration. It appeared that these cause a drop in access time: when removed, speeds went up to 15-16 ms. :\
