1.4 tbird only runs at 1.05?

I slapped a tbird 1.4(266mhz bus)on a FIC AD-11 and covered it with a volcano-2 hsf and a bit of thermal paste. Filled the DIMM sockets with Crucial PC2100 CL2.5 DDR 256MB + 256MB. Throw in an original Geforce (Elsa Erazor X) in the AGP slot and it POSTs fine. I hooked up the Adaptec SCSI card to Segate Hawk 4.5 gb drive and Plextor 32Wide to install OS and it still POSTs fine.

I can't get Win2000, 98, ME, Linux or anything to install. I get "can't load \i386\ntkrnlmp.exe. The error code is 4". Tried 2 different DDR modules, 3 vid cards, 2 scsi cards, disable "everything" etc. Same result.

After countless hours of web searches and hardware substitutions, I can get the system to function by swapping my chip for a friends Duron 600(6*100). The 1.4 also works fine in the other system (but only at 1050(10.5*100) tht board doesn't do 133(266)mhz bus. Suprise! it works fine in my rig at 1050 as well. I have no access to another DDR rig to test the ram or 133mhz board to test the chip at full speed either. Any suggestions?

TIA
Dan

To me it sounds like the CPU is faulty.. because you said the mobo worked fine with the duron in it right.. that's strange.

It might be the power supply that's not rated for a 1.4ghz Athlon.

You need lots of juice for those 1.4gigers.

Agree w/SMP. One other thing. Have you gone into the Bios and manually set it up for a 1.4GHz processor? It should autorecognize it, but sometimes it doesn't. Good luck.

Hell, that's OK at that speed it'll still spank a 1.4 Pentium 4 😀😀😀😀😀

Oh, go right ahead ! They had a firesuit cleaning special for the 4TH......

With the bus jumper set to 133 the system posts 1400mhz, but crashes all over the place when trying to boot or install OS. The temp never goes above 100F.

Tried a new power supply (400w Powmax)... no help there.
Bios offers no cpu selection.

I'm thinking
a) Faulty chip (runs at 100mhz bus, but NOT 133) doesn't get hot though
b) Faulty ram (same as above, but not as likely since I tried 2 different sticks)
c) Faulty board (has a problem running at 133 bus)

I'm gonna try the chip in another (non-DDR) board (abit KT7a-RAID) tomorrow at my brother's. That would rule out (a) if it works.

I just have a hunch the fault is in the board. What are the odds that 2 sticks of ram are bad?

It's not actually stable even at 1050mhz. Random crashes etc. I tried upping the core voltage but that still is no help.

Default vcore: 1.78v, tried upping it to 1.85v.

the mobo? - highly unlikely as well...or so it seems...
i wonder. - can u connect a bridge to adjust the cpu multiplier to be slightly lower so that defaults to, say, ~1ghz @ 133mhz fsb. (around 8 = 1064mhz)...if it works, then your board can function fine at 133mhz fsb.

it being able to function at 100mhz but not 133mhz would be seriously odd...

then again, so would two faulty sticks of crucial memory...

Why dont you make sure it's not the mobo or the ram by running the 600 duron at 800. Run the duron with a 133mhz fsb.

i wish i thought of that before he took back his chip and burned it up cuz he didn't seat the hs properly.

im gonna try pencil trick like you suggest

tried some more ram (crucial) and same issue so I am going to rule that out for now.

All L1 bridges are closed, so no pencil was needed. Just set the multiplier to 7.5 via on board dip switches. So it does boot at 1Ghz without the "can't load \i386\ntkrnlmp.exe. The error code is 4" garbage. Win2k installed fine.

So the RAM is fine.

Now I am torn between chip and board.

If I had to blame either AMD or FIC for something, it would be FIC 😉 😉 😉 😉

Borrowed my buddy's 1.4 chip and works fine at full speed in my rig. No to try my BUM chip in my buddys rig to see if it really is crapped.
