Do the new 1.33GHz cpu that are just showing up have the Palimino core? And other than being 20% cooler, what other features might the Palimino have? Thx.

I can tell you that the new 133 Mhz FSB Athlons are NOT Palimino cores.. just normal TBirds of good enough quality to run fast.

Palamino's have a revised cache architecture so decent software which recognises the chip would be able to point this out (if there is any). In which case the speed improvement over a 1.2GHz would be more than just the extra 100MHz would yield.

I am also pretty sure that the new 1.3GHz are not Palamino.

I believe Palamino will be not be available for a couple of months yet. The new 1.3 Ghz T-birds are exactly that: Plain old T-birds. Cheap and fast!

Thanks; I just read at aceshardware.com that it might not be until July.

As things stand now it looks like the 1.3 and 1.33GHz Athlons will still be based on th older T-Bird core.
Latest news seems to be indicating July for the Palomino which will then start off at 1.4GHz.

vss....where's you info 'bout the improved cache architecture?

For what it's worth the 1.3ghz are NOT pally's. There's been discussion (time, and time again) about a lengthened pipeline (to allow it to ramp more easily), but that lowers IPC, increases power consumption, which is something which we've been told is the opposite of pally. The thought of adding another ALU is not very credible, because that would increase die size and power consumption rather considerably.

So far, there's little that can be certain, and that is the fact that power consumption will be lower. Other than that NOTHING is proven so far. AMD's been pretty tight lipped.

yeah.. and I hope they're being tight lipped cause they have a KICK ASS product to release and not because they're buying time..

BK,

I bow down to your knowledge of processors, but if memory serves me correctly, the Mustang was gonna sport an improved cache interface raising the it from 64-bit to probably 256 or 512 internal interface to the L2 on-die cache. From what I have heard, the palamino's will pick this up, but I'm not certain. I have also heard that they may have more cache, again not certain.

I'm only going on rumours so, if its wrong.... </me shrugs>

vss - don't bow down to me....I don't know jack compared to what I'd like to know.

About mustang....afaik, mustang core allowed up to 1mb of ondie cache. Pally's core is the mustang core, but without the same amount of ondie cache as the "server version" (aka, mustang). Any other differences that were announced I'm not aware of - the core just has support for larger ondie caches.

Then again, I could be wrong.

/me shrugs too

I think the cache interface is going to be improved for either Palamino or the server version (cant remember the name). As we saw with the coppermine P3 vs. the Katmai P3, it isn't the amount of cache, but the speed and bandwidth available to it. Of course, 2MB full-speed cache is always nice.
