Woo hoo, IT REALLY DOES WORK!

I guess I was a little too anxious to get this working though...

These suckers seem hard to find in socal, called everywhere, and arcadia claimed
they might have it, but they havent had time to go through their shipment of stock
so didn't know if they were getting in, so I ended up calling the santa monica location
and found out they still had them...so....

drove through 1.5 hrs of traffic from pasadena to santa monica just to pick one
up, then drove another hour back. (reminder to self, 101 and 405 sucks as*).

dropped by 99 cent store, and picked up a serial sync cable for palm III/VII, and also
a USB sync cable.

after getting home, filed off the back of the palm cable since it was too thick, and it
fit into the camera perfectly! then got out the ol' soldering iron, and started doing
some splicing to match up the usb end of the cable with the palm end.

after did that, downloaded the software, installed the two .inf files, plugged in the
camera, and "ping", heard the sound the camera normally makes when you turn it
on, and now on the LCD it showed "PC"....woo hoo!

was able to download the pixs I took, and it was super fast, a few seconds for about
10 pictures.......definitely not the 10 hours they were getting initially.

of course, quality was nothing to write home about, kinda reminded me of the pix my
crappy largan 350 used to take ......but hey, for 10.99 plus two 0.99 cables, (plus gas
for 2.5 hours on the road, and $3 for parking at santa monica), its a HOT DEAL!

Cant get it to work!!!

I have loaded the drivers many times
clicked on both inf drivers to load
and rebooted but no luck
XP Computer sees camera-makes noise and wants drivers but even if I point to them --It wont use them
A friend tried for hrs and gave up--used another computer and it worked!

Any ideas would be great --any body else have the same problem--Cable is correct --used the one from radio shack--fits perfect btw--just have to sand it a little
please help somebody

running out of ideas

nope, didn't lense adjustment... that would mean I have to open it up and adjust it for every picture....

waiting for someone to come with a ghetto gadget to do it on the outside with it closed.... or when i have time

At first I was having alot of problems with the software stuff too but after a few trys, i found this works:

1)Remove/Uninstall any previous detects of the 2 digicams... yes, theres 2 that show up..
2)Reboot
3)Plug it in and you'll see detected USB device
4)Let it search for junk and finds nothing and just click ok all the way through
5)Install the inf files ( I did one with "fl" then the other one )
6)Run the program
7)Get your pictures
8)yay!

weirdly, you don't need it to detect the camera to show as the dakota cam.. mine doesn't even show up there anymore after messing around with it and stuff but it still works the software fine.

Ahh! Now it all makes perfect sense to me. I had read some of the prior Slashdot articles, talking about this "Ritz" camera, and I was thinking that you got it by sending in some box-tops from Ritz crackers, or something. I was disappointed because I went to the store and looked through, and there were no camera offers on the back of the box. I had totally forgotten that there was a "Ritz" camera company. :p

Sounds like a neat hack, I might pick one up.

post some pics
http://bellsouthpwp.net/w/i/will87/ghettocam/ spun around my chair and took some.... not too great but for $11.66 ... not too bad...

Is it safe for you to leave youe comp parts on that antistatic bag? I though that those bags pushed the static outwards, so hardware is safe inside the bag and not ontop of it? And back on topic...Gonna definitely try this..a camera a can lug around and not worry about scratchig/breaking :)
