1.3 Duron or 950 Athlon ??

I am putting together and entry level system for my sister. She just surfs the net, types letters and makes greeting cards. I picked up a Gigabyte Ga-7dx with a AMD-761 chipset. Witch processor would give better performance? The 1.3 Duron or the 950 T-bird? Both are $56 on price watch. NO O/C ing.

Seems like general opinion is that the Durons that use the Morgan core, from 1GHz on up, approach the performance of a Thunderbird Athlon at similar clock speed, probably due to the data-prefetch feature. That might be an overgeneralization, but with an extra 350MHz I would expect the Duron to be faster in everything.

The 1.3 Duron would give you better performance for your money especially since the price is the same as the 950 Thunderbird even for an entry system.

Also make sure you have bios version F5 or later installed on motherboard for it to detect the Morgan.

The Morgan will be more or less on par with an equivalently clocked 200fsb T-Bird, but will lose to a 266fsb T-Bird at the same clock. That being said, the 1.3Ghz will spank the 950 just because of clock speed.

I would recommend the Duron. Recently I replaced my Duron 1.0 with an Athlon 1.4 (266 fsb) and I can hardly tell the difference in everyday use. Would imagine that a Duron 1.3 would outperform the Athlon 950 hands down.

Yep I have to agree. 1.3 Duron all the way. If it was 1.3 Ghz Duron vs 1.2 Ghz 266 MHz Athlon it would be a different story, but a 1.3 Duron will spank anything under 1 GHz.

Depends on if you have the AXIA somewhat as many 1ghz T-birds that aren't AXIA won't do past 1.33 or so and that 1.3 Morgan can be made to do 150x9.5=1.425 with relative ease.

Well, I've always understood that the sub-1GHz T-Birds oc'ed pretty poorly (because they were based on the same stepping as the old Spitfire Duron's that reached the limit at 1GHz. Thats why I've always avoided the lower end T-Bird's because of that and also the lack of sub-1GHz 266fsb parts.
