1-2 day delay in receiving emails

Seems that several people emailed and those emails weren't received until a few days later. Trying to replicate the problem, I emailed from a hotmail account, which was received almost instantly. Is there any reason for the delay? I'm thinking it's an issue on the sender's end.

emailed from what? emailed from where? all same ISP?
