Get rid of that god awful hard drive....the hard drive is already the slowest piece in your system by about 3 orders of magnitude...you really don't need to make it any slower :p

Get a 7200rpm with good seek times, like the IBM 60GXP or Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 60.

Did you re-install windows? Your performance will take a major hit when you swap motherboards. I had to do a clean install to get any decent performance out of my new system.

what type of performance is it better at or about the same speed?

if you are talking loading time, then it is your HD that is lagging you. if you are talking video games, im 99% sure that 450 you had pushed that TNT I to the max it could handle and it would be your video card that is holding you up.

How are you determining the speed? I mean, as far as a human is concerned we have almost no chance of detecting the difference between the two systems if you're just futzing around in windows, mostly since the only delay you'll see is when it accesses the HDD, which will be almost the same speed in both systems.

If you're comparing performance in 3D games it is well known that even with a PIII 600 and a GeForce2, the video card will still be the bottleneck. So don't expect any performance increase while using that TNT2 card.

If you want to see how much faster your system really is running Seti@Home and compare times to finish a work unit.

What do you expect a TNT would limit a K6-2 400 in games, let alone a T-Bird 1.2Ghz!!! Get a new video card!

First off, did you doa clean windows install?
If you did, did you install the drivers for the chipset. The Via 4-1 drivers (download here)

You must install these drivers to get good performance out of the platform. Windows does not natively support the AMD chipsets or any of the newer intel chipsets.

If that really is an original Nvidia TNT, then you wouldn't get ANY improvement even if you upgraded to a 10ghz P4, at least in 3dgames. You're videocard-limited in graphics unless you get a faster 3d card.

As far as general system speed, Sandra is a good thing to check relative speeds by. I concur that an old 5400rpm HD is noticably slower in windows than a 7200rpm.
