1-19-2004 Heightened voter interest can revive selection process

As voters in Iowa tonight cast the first votes in the process that will determine the 2004 Democratic nominee, polls clearly show the party has an uphill struggle to topple Bush.

To listen to political pundits, and even many Democrats, the party's presidential candidates are heading for disaster this fall. They say the field is too liberal, lacks a positive message and is opening the door to a landslide re-election for President Bush.

If the economy continues to improve and if there is no significant terrorist incident at home or in Iraq the Democrats will definately lose.

Why do you believe that? Is it because it's what you hear in the news over and over? It seems like to me, as much as one outcome can look all but certain, you really don't know until the day actually comes. If turnout was particularly high, anything could happen. It just seems silly to be so sure of something that is so far off, and it breeds the "why bother" attitude IMO.

From what I have witnessed in the past.

I'll go one further, if there is a significant terrorist incident between now & the election, it'll increase Bush's chances of re-election.

I don't hear the Dems screaming about increasing national security (witht he exception of Liberman/Clark), I hear them ranting about losing civil liberties as a result of the tightened/new laws.

I seriously doubt that because it will mean that this Administration failed to protect us!

I agree Bush will probably win. Not because of the reasons Red gives, but because Mr Robertson says God told him so.

there is some hope

Carter and Bush Sr. both had higher marign approvals over nots at this stage of the game and both lost.

But I think we'll end up having to wait till 2008 for the rescue to begin.
