Hells kitchen (west side 9th avenue between 42 and 56th or so) offers a lot of great eats. Its very safe and laid back. Your wife can walk around topless with wads of cash hanging out your pocket. The Rainbow army protects all that come through this section. You will see the flags noting its a safe zone. If you eat at Hells Kitchen in Hells Kitchen you get a certificate of completion from the mayors offfice.
....

Of all the wonderful things in this post, this is my favorite bit.

:D

I recommend The Meatball Shop, it's kinda awesome. When my wife and I went, I did the slider platter thing ... my favorite was a chicken meatball with parmesan cream sauce. She had beef meetballs with mushroom gravy over mashed potatoes, that was really good too.

If you find yourself on/near Wall Street, check out Cucina Bene Pizza. Doesn't look like much, but they had THE BEST calzones. My wife and I had them delivered to the Andaz when we stayed there, and they were incredible. Very greasy, and sometimes that's just what you want...

Keep this in mind as you travel through the "touristy areas"

If someone stops you with a CD in their hand, say no thanks and keep walking.
Don't stop walking. Don't say anything other than no thanks. Don't touch the CD or shake hands or anything.
What they do is get you to say your name and then they write your name on the CD. Some will hand the CD to you.
Then it turns into intimidation tactics to get you to give them money for the shitty CD "Because yo I wrote your name on this....".
They are con artists trying to scare cash out of you. They pretty much scan the crowd and look for people who might get nervous at the sight of young black men.

Greenpeace\Childrens international\Green peace Whale children international - These soulless creatures have that bubbly innocent smile glued on to their face. They'll jump in your path and try and guilt shit out you. Just say sorry and walk around them.

The "do you like comedy?" people. Just walk around them. They aren't too bad.

The gypsy women and their "crutches" or their "starving child". These people are most likely involved with organized crime. Ignore.

Any white man on the side of the street with a sign over the age of 40 will have a sign stating that they are Vet. They do this because they know mid westerners and southerners eat that shit up.
Any white person on the side of the street with a sign under the age of 30 is "Just looking for another 5 dollars so they can buy a train ticket home!!! All they need is few more bucks!!!" I've seen some that have only needed "5 MORE DOLLARS!" park on one street corner for 4 months.

Rarely will you find homeless black person on the side of the street with a sign. NYPD does a pretty good job of whisking the dark people away. Black homeless people will always be moving. Those that are stationary will have a simple cup that they shake but they make sure they don't stay in one spot for too long.

You will see some folks hanging out front of deli or pizzeria asking for a food or saying their starving. Having bought a slice for a few people over the years...that's up to you.

Final odds and ends: There are police everywhere. Pay attention to flow of pedestrian traffic. Don't pair sneakers with a tucked in shirt.

Pizza, lots of it.

What NY'ers mean when they say their pizza is the best:

"These 5 shops we have will blow the pizza from your state out of the water, but the rest are just par NY-style pizza shops"

I didn't listen to anyone here and I went to Times Square! I don't regret it though very cool place. Stayed at the Amsterdam hotel, ate joes pizza, the halal guys, totonnos pizzeria. Visited Brooklyn, the Bronx, Coney Island. Went to the madam tussauds wax attraction (wife wanted to go). Food here is a lot cheaper than I thought it would be. Waiting for doughs to open up now (they opened late today for some reason, sign on the door) before we head back to the airport. Pretty good trip!
