Simple yes/no.

For example 40 year old man marrying a 10 year old girl.

I am asking for a good reason.

I think it was accepted in some places, though they were generally not allowed to consummate the marriage until after the girl was old enough to start her menstrual cycle.

In most cultures, no. The girl usually had to be "of age" which was usually around ~15-18

Also the same friend who I am having this debate with now claims the U.S had laws 100 years ago that said the age of consent was 10. Truth to his statement?

I know the reason your asking (won't say, don't worry)... Many customs from years ago were for women "girls" to marry once they became a woman (had their menstruation)

the definition of what is ok in the institution of marriage is something that's always been changing and evolving and always will.

1000 years ago women and children were property of men, so the men could do whatever they wanted with them

yeap. historicly once a person hit puberty they were considered a adult. its just been in ercent times that a person is only considered a adult at 18 (or 21)

Muhammad married someone under 10, didn't he?

I also know marrying 12 year olds was common in Indian culture, but usually the man was very young as well; getting married early was simply part of the culture. I don't believe that to be so much of the case now.

I also know that in the time of my grandparents (WWII era), many men would marry well under 18. I don't know about the huge age disparity of 40 or 10. That's ridiculous and disgusting, imo.

Define "okay"

Because when I was in Iraq, such practice (where the female was at least as young as preteen) was quite legal among native Iraqis and at least locally accepted
